Toddlers: 24 Months+

Moms of 2+, did you 2nd LO learn to sleep through noise well?

I'm just curious if those who have 2 (or more) LOs found that the second, third etc. babies learned to sleep through noise really well because of their siblings.

DS (our 1st LO) napped in a PNP in our living room for his first 4 months. It was always my intention to get him used to sleeping through noise...but he ended up being such a touchy sleeper that we would make sure to make NO noise while he slept.  Obviously he isn't going to be quiet when his sister is here!

Did you find that your newborn adjusted to sleeping through all the toddler noise, or did you have to put them to sleep on a different floor or other side of the house?

  • Yes!  With DS I always had the house so quiet during naps and would be so careful to not wake him.  With DD at the beginning I would try to keep DS quiet but that quickly became exhausting! LOL  DD has always just slept through it all!  DS also slept through the newborn stage of his sister waking up several times at night.

  • No, in fact DD (my first) sleeps through noise much better than DS.  DS is a very light sleeper and I don't know why because I always made sure not to have the house completely quiet during nap and bedtime with both of them.

I have to constantly tell DD to be quieter.  It doesn't work; the only time he really sleeps well is when DD is sleeping also.  Unfortunately, DD is starting to give up naps so it has been difficult.

  • Both of my girls are good sleepers.  DD2 was exposed to all the household noise from day 1 and adjusted quickly.  She napped in her swing in the living room for the first 2 months.  The girls share a room now and rarely wake each other.

  • No. My twins learned to sleep through each other. They share a room and still don't wake each other up.

The baby is a much lighter sleeper. He wakes up if he hears them, us, the dog, etc. I keep a fan on in his room and a sound machine and the door closed. Without all of those, he'd be awake. I can't even open his door to check on him without waking him.

  • All 3 of my girls napped in the bouncey chair in the LR until they grew out of it then they were in the crib.  I am sure it is never quiet around here, but I just make sure no one is in the room next to hers when she naps (but she's 2.5 now).

Found out when the neighbor girl rang the doorbell twice today that it didn't wake her, thankfully.
  • LO#3 was in the PNP in the living room tonight and napped through my husband vacuuming and my older two screaming over the vacuum to talk to each other tonight. It is amazing how much noise this kid can snooze through!

  • We use sound machines for both kids to drown out the household noises. My oldest almost never woke up during the night time cries/feedings despite their rooms sharing a wall. There were a few tantrums my oldest threw during #2's nap time and she learned quickly that if she woke the baby she'd get a spanking. I would try to keep the older one away from the nursery during naps time because I didn't want to risk a nap being ruined.

  • My second child sleeps like a champ, and has pretty much from day one. My oldest had some sleep issues when she was 1 1/2 - 2 years, but they were not related to noise from the baby.

My third baby, on the other hand, naps just fine even with her noisy sisters playing nearby, but her night-time sleeping still sucks.

  • Yes, my youngest sleeps through anything. On thanksgiving she was sleeping in my nephews crib and my SIL brought nephew in to change his diaper. He was throwing the biggest tantrum ever inches from her head and she didn't even flinch.

  • Yes and no.

He could fall asleep with any noise but 45 min into the nap if anyone even flushes the toilet he was wide awake and cranky.

  • DD (#2) did adjust to the noise.  We were not quiet and went about our daily routine.  Whenever she napped, we put her in her crib with a fan on.  She is a WONDERFUL sleeper and goes down with no problems.

With DS (#1) we kept the house so quiet all the time.  I wish now we would have made more noise when he was younger.  He was and still is a crappy sleeper.  If we have more, we will definitely do the same things we did with DD, hoping we get the same results.
