I love the Irish name Aoibheann, pronounced Aven. I love it, but the spelling is likely to get messed up often. Aven is ok, but I'm not a fan of the spelling. Other suggestions?
Um... why not? Gaelic names have different sounds associated with the letters. Haven't you ever wondered how you get Shawn from Sean? Or Shaymus from Seamus? Aiobheann is no different, it's simply less popular.
OP - I think it's a lovely name, but will have a hard time in America. That's not to say that I'd change the spelling to fit where you live, but you'd have to think long about the headache it will cause your daughter and other people. I can't say what I would do. It would depend on how strong the Irish history is in your family.
That's why I want to find a spelling that's less complicated! So it wouldn't be a huge burden.
It has nothing to do with it being traditional. I just couldn't imagine using a name that's spelled so far off. It's the same as when other ladies get up in arms over trendy names but I digress.
That is a rough one. The true Irish spelling is difficult to spell and pronounce. I am not going to lie, I stared at it and could not figure it out. Aven is much easier but if you aren't happy with that spelling, I would look into different names.
I tried to find different spellings with no luck.

I think it's a lovely name but if I were using it I'd put it in the MN spot. I agree with the PPs that spelling it phonetically loses something. If you use it, definitely own it and go with the traditional spelling.

I love the sound of the name - but I think both the spelling and the pronunciation are going to be tough in the states. I could see her being called Abe-he-anne. I think with this one I might pick the Eaven spelling.

You obviously didn't read pp's comments. It's a traditional Irish name. I think Joy put up a link to BTN about it.
OP, I really do like the name, but have to agree with pp's that it would give your LO a lifetime of mispronunciations. I also don't think spelling phonetically will do it justice. If you love the name, then by all means go for it! I think I would personally use it as a mn.
I know a 4 year old girl named Aven. Always thought of it as a cross between Ava and Eden. I'd probably go with this spelling to avoid a lifetime of pronunciation issues.

I'm dead serious, that's the original Irish spelling. It's too much for me, but I like the way it is said. I just can't think of a spelling I'd like.
Are you having an AE fail?
And as far as the name - Aven is a really pretty name, no help here on other spellings, this is the first time I've heard it.
This is a big GP name for me. Honestly, though, I don't like it with different spelling. Here's my thought, though. 90% of the time, when you introduce yourself to someone new, they don't know the spelling and just learn the pronounciation. As someone who had a somewhat uncommon name growing up (and one with a couple different spellings and pronounciations), a strange spelling really doesn't deter me from using a name.
I understand liking traditional names, spelled in the traditional way. If you don't mind that it will likely be mispronounced and love the name, go for it. As an alternative, have you considered Siobhan? It's still traditional, but a little more well known, so it would likely be pronounced correctly more often than not.

Same here, but GP name, but I figure that since there weren't as many Gaelic speakers here, it would be tougher than Eirian, or names like Siobhan or Maeve. I still really like it and Aoife and others like it.

I was thinking the same thing!
The name is pretty but the spelling will be confusing to most.

Oh my goodness. Beautiful name, but the spelling will definitely be an issue for your child's WHOLE life. I would maybe try to find an alternate spelling.

OP what about Eavan, as suggested on the website?

If you lived in Ireland, maybe. But I suspect you don't.
Despite it's noble origins, it's just too difficult for a name and your kid will likely face a lifetime of misspellings and mispronounciations.
I'd Pass.
