Pack N' Play

Hi ladies,

We registered for a pack n' play to use when traveling to see close family. However recently the family has moved to where we would have to fly to see them. Are pack n' plays a must? I feel like we have so much and could pass on it. Live in rainy Oregon so we wouldnt use it outside while enjoying the sunshine till he/she get to the point where they wont want to be contained since the weather is crappy till June. Thanks

Re: Pack N' Play

  • We have the Aprica and used it in our bedroom for the first two months while DD slept in our room.  We took it overnight on car trips but have yet to take it on the plane - we either borrowed from a friend or used the hotel's.

We haven't used it yet for DD to play in.

It isn't a must as far as the bare necessities go, but it can offer some convenience.  I would look in to the Aprica as it is reasonable priced, sturdy, easy to open/close and the bassinet feature is great quality.

  • DS is almost 2 and we still use it, though he is probably too big for it.  There are times when we just can't keep an eye on him and it's the only place to put him downstairs.   We honestly have used it on so many different occasions, I can't imagine not having one.

  • We got a PNP that came with a newborn napper and changing station. We expect to use it for naps in our living room from the beginning and I'm sure once baby outgrows the napper, we'll use the other areas as well. Like you visiting family that involves overnight stays includes a plane trip so it won't be something we could travel with, however, for hotel stays and weekend trips locally I can see it being very useful as a place for baby to sleep.
  • I hear ya on the weather thing, I live just north of the Columbia River in WA...so I can sympathize!

That being said, we use ours ALL THE TIME! We got a used one from a friend that we use for camping so our nice one doesn't get dirty. Our LO slept in the P'n'P for her first 8 weeks, first in our room for five weeks and then the living room for three weeks. We take it to her grandparents or friends for either when they are babysitting or if we know we will be there during nap time or late at night. And it goes with us when we travel, because no matter how nice some of the hotel rooms are, I have come to find that their cribs or P'n'P are too dirty for my liking. We stayed at the Bend, OR Marriott and their P'n'P had drool or spit up or barf stains on the mattress part. Even though they have me sheets for it and SO said they most likely spray it with bleach water....I still didn't trust it. And sometimes hotels don't have cribs at all. So it just makes it easier to bring ours and not worry about it. We just did a 3,000 mile trip two weeks ago and used it for every stop.....

  • I say not at all necessary.  We had DD in our room in the PnP for exactly 2 nights before we booted her to her crib.  So that's your decision, if you need/want baby in your room for awhile then a PnP would be handy.  She (and we) slept WAY better in our separate rooms.  Then it was boxed up and not used again until my in-laws moved nearby, and we set the PnP up at their house so she can nap or sleep overnight when they sit for her.

I never felt the need to 'contain' her once she started crawling.  If there was some emergency and I had to leave her unattended for a minute, I could plop her in her crib.  We have an open floorplan though, so I can keep an eye on her from pretty much anywhere in the main living/kitchen space and still get things done.

Plus, I would almost GUARANTEE you could borrow a PnP from a friend if you were travelling or in some sort of pinch and needed one for a night.
