Our children's book collection is practically nonexistent. I think this is what we're going to suggest as gifts when family and friends ask us what to get her.
As far as toys are concerned, I'd look for toys your LO can grasp and are not too heavy. We just got this one for DD and she seems to enjoy it :] https://manhattantoy1.shptron.com/p/winkel?pp=8pp=8 [mobile bumping, sorry for the nonclicky]
I'm getting my DS a mobile that plays music and has lights on the celing at night because he loves to look at things. The only other age appropriate toys are a playmat/activity center and those rattles that can go on the wrist seemed to entertain him as well.

I am stocking up on the Gymboree Play Music toys because we dont live close enough to do the twice a week classes like I did with ds1.
The other big hits at that age for ds1 was Sophie and his Jumperoo. Around 5 to 6mo he started playing with the Leapfrog music table. He also started to sign a little after 6mo so the baby Signing Time dvds are a good thing to start early if you are interested in that.
Re: Toys for 3 to 4 months old
The Lamaze brand Mortimer the Moose. We hang it from the play gym and his seat and he likes it. I'm sure next month he will be even more into it.
