Tripled birth weight at 1 year birthday?

DD turns 1 tomorrow.  She had gone for the second round of her flu shot on Saturday and weighed 21 pounds even (with clothes on).  Her birth weight was 7 lbs. 12 oz., so she's not even close to tripling her birth weight.

Just curious if your LO tripled his/her weight  on their first birthday.

  • I'm no expert at math but if she is right at 21 pounds didn't she triple? Or at least get right close to it? Anyways, I think 21 pounds is very common at a year.

DS definitely passed his tripled weight but he started out at 5 pounds! He was 22 at a year.

This. Your LO is only a couple pounds short of tripling birth weight.
My DD had just about tripled her birth weight at her 9 month well visit, so I'm assuming she will have passed that when we go in for her one year visit next week.

  • DD1 didn't triple her birth weight until she was 20 months.

DD2 is one pound away from tripling her birth weight.  The girl is huge!

  • Nope, not a triple-er here. DD was 8lbs at birth and was 21lb at her 1 year.  So a few pounds shy.

But DD has had some weight issues.....she was a later doubler too.

But the pedi is happy with her weight (she gained over 5lbs since 8 months) so we're good.

I'm guessing the tripling is more of a guideline/typical weight pattern rather than if they haven't tripled, something is automatically wrong.

  • Thank you for the reassurance!  I get a little too exacting.  I guess being 10% below isn't horrible.   :)

  • At 7 lbs. 12 oz., LO tripling birth weight would be 23 lbs. 4 oz.

OP, DD was 8 lbs. 11.5 oz. at birth and at her 1 year appointment, she was 21.9 lbs. (we'll call it 22 lbs.) so, no, my LO didn't triple her birth weight.

  • My LO barely managed more than doubling her weight. She was 7.2 at birth and is now 15.10. Her pedi just said that as long as she stays in her curve and I make it a point to give her higher calorie options she'll be fine.

  • Baby girl was 9 lbs at birth and is 27 lbs. 4 oz. now so that worked out just about right lol.

  • DD was 6lbs 5oz at birth and 18lbs even at one year.  She is 15 oz off from tripling, but considering she went through a period of time where she was diagnosed as failure to thrive, I am very content with 18 lbs and her staying on a growth curve for the past few months.

  • Yes, DD has.  She was a little over 6 lbs at birth and now she weighs about 20 lbs.  Her 1-year appointment is next week so we'll see how much she weighs for sure.

  • Hell no, DS hasn't LOL. He was 9 lbs 5 oz when born, only around 20 or 21 pounds now.

  • Definitely not...DD was just shy of 9 pounds when she was born and she was 21.8 pounds at her 1 year appt. I think DS was about the same at one year as well but he was 8.5 pounds at birth.

  • We don't have her 12m appt until Dec 4 but I am pretty sure she hasn't. At her nine month appointment she hadn't even quite doubled her birth weight and I doubt she has gained that much since then.

ETA: We ended up taking her in for a possible ear infection and she was weighed and she definitely hasn't tripled her weight. She weighed 8lbs  4oz at birth so tripled would be 25lbs 2oz and she is only 18lbs at one year so she has a ways to go but I have learned not to worry about her weight so much. She is happy and healthy and that is what matters. It is okay for her to be a little peanut.

  • Nope. She was 8 lbs at birth and was 20 lb 14 oz at her 1 year. Her stats were all in the middle, 49th, 50th, and 51st percentile. I cant remember which was which.

  • No. Sad We are trying to bulk her up right now because she didn't gain anything over the last two months, so now she has a weight check appt in two weeks. She was 7 lb 11 oz at birth and at her 1 year appt weighed 17 lb 5 oz.

  • I don't think LO will be triple when we have his appointment at the end of this month. When he was born he was 8 lb 12 oz and the last time we went to the doc (I believe it was the end of September) he was 22.5 lbs. I am assuming he will be around 24 lbs at his 1 year. So not quite, but almost. As long as they are on a steady growth curve, I wouldn't worry about it

  • HAven't seen Doc for 1 year appointment yet, but at 9 months, DS had already trippled his birth weight.

He was 7lbs even at birth, and weighed in at 23lbs 8oz at his 9 month appointment. He's been in 18 month clothing and size 5 diapers. I know he has slimmed down as he got taller, but I am slightly scared to see how much more he's grown :)
