Update, please help me!

What a sh*t day. I realized this morning that while pumping my right nipple had swollen to twice the normal size...so when I pumped I didn't have one clogged duct, they were all swollen shut, not mention too big for the pump shield. My OB told me to go to the ER, where I spent the entire day. The dr. I saw wasn't super versed in nursing/pumping, but could tell there was an infection, possibly an abscess. So I was put on IV antibiotics and given pain meds because after trying to pump it out this morning I was in unbelievable pain, comparable to the contractions in natural labor before I hit transition.

so after a while on the antibiotics and fluids I asked for a breast pump because the swelling was gone and it came right back after I got less than an oz. so I asked the dr. What to do because I was right where I started. She had no real ideas, she said either let it dry up or keep pumping and the infection should go away in 48 hrs. So I called my LC, she doesnt think it sounds like regular mastitis and that I need to stop the hot compresses and pumping because the swelling indicates I'm doing more harm than good. She said I could try to pump again after the infection is gone, or I can take measures to dry it up, like sudafed, ice, cabbage leaves.. Either way the next few days are going to suck because I will be super engorged. The hospital gave me 4 percocets I can take if I need them.

now I have a fever, awesome. DH told me to sleep in the guest room and he will do motn without me. I'm no sure it's worth it to me to keep pumping, it's pretty scary and miserable to have an infection no dr. Is familiar with. Hopefully I can sleep without it, but if not Percocet it is. Just to top it off, tomorrow is our meet the baby party my sister is hosting because I was too nervous for a shower and it looks DH may be going without me.

*hugs* I am so sorry. Have you asked for encouragement on the BFing boards? The ladies there have experienced a whole lot. Really, really hope you are feeling better soon and the infection clears up completely.

I'm sorry, that sounds so awful! I don't have any other advice, except what the other ladies said. I'm sorry you're so miserable and might miss your party! Hope you are feeling better soon Broken Heart

This just sounds horrible! I really hope things clear up soon for you - and that maybe you could find a doctor who could actually give you a bit more encouragement that they know what the heck is going on there, versus what you've been experiencing.

I second missbea3 who said you need to do what's best for you: because that way you can do what's best for your son ~ and I hope that you didn't have to miss the party! (just noticed when you posted this, versus when I'm replying) But sending healing vibes your way
