Shoes!

Please recommend shoes for a little one learning to walk.  Went to pick up my son from daycare today and the teachers were saying he needed to get some "walking shoes".  He's just standing right now, but I guess they think it won't be long.  Thanks!

Re: Shoes!

  • I love the robeez. Target sells a brand similar. About $5 cheaper.i don't think the target ones are as cute.

  • I've always understood that LOs should wear shoes as little as possible to allow for their feet to develop. Therefore I've only ever bought shoes that will provide protection when outside on the pavement or something, when LO is really little.

Do they want them for protection for outside? Or are they anticipating that he'll wear them all day?

Either way you want shoes that are really soft soled, leather is good. But if they're being worn outside you'll want something with a rubber sole.

  • We have a pair of robeez and also a pair of slippers from target w/ treads and high sock like tops... both are great and stay on pretty well but are soft and good for developing feet.

My podiatrist said they should wear shoes all the time when they start standing, jumping and creeping along furniture.

Interesting. Did he/she say why? I can't imagine trying to wrangle my 9mth old's feet into shoes.

Did your podiatrist say what type of shoe they recommend?

  • We do barefoot, socks, or robeez.  I just got her first pair of robeez on her this morning and they worked great.

We live in the midwest and have wood floors so I like to keep something on her little toes so they don't get so cold.

  • Now that my babe is walking I have her in hard soled shoes because she pulls more things down from shelves and drops things on her feet while standing all the time.
  • We use the Target brand similar to Robeez and I've also gotten some soft soled shoes from Old Navy. Both types work very well, IMO!

  • another vote for Robeez - we get knock offs on ebay for really cheap.

  • He didn't recommend a specific shoe but definitely nothing rigid. He said it is because their bones are soft and the extra protection from the shoe helps protect their feet. He also said to check the size frequently. We put DS in shoes every day. If not, his socks are trashed by the end of the day. He is really active though and constantly climbing, jumping, etc.
Anyway, just passing along what a podiatrist told me, FWIW!
  • DH's entire family seems to be very concerned about DS's lack of shoes.  I was going to get a pair just for Christmas pictures, but even the lady at the shoe store said she didn't think he was ready.  He kept arching his foot and we couldn't get anything on him. (And I'm sure she would've loved to sell me the $40+ Stride Right shoes if she could).    He is standing and doing a little bit of cruising, but not walking yet.

  • I took my LO to the StrideRite store at the mall as soon as he started spending a significant amount of time standing on his feet holding onto things.  My pediatrician was non-committal on it, he said that some people think that it helps teach the kids to stand with their heels on the ground but he didn't know if that was really true or not.  I mostly got them for my guy because as someone else said earlier here, his socks were trashed by the end of the day!  The lady at StrideRite fitted the shoes and made sure he had plenty of room length/width/and heighth-wise (his feet are real chubby!).  The leather is super soft and the soles are rubber but they are not rigid. They were a little pricey but I dont regret it, they've held up well and can go in the washer if they get dirty.  LO has been wearing them every day to daycare, except for during naptime, for the past 4 months and they look brand new still.  I would say if it's something you're interested in, at least go and talk to them, you don't have to buy anything if you don't think it's the right thing!

This seems crazy to me. I rarely wear shoes and I walk all the time. I wouldn't want my daughter's growing feet to be constrained in shoes all the time.
