3rd Trimester

anyone taking Omeprazole for reflux?

I am 7 months pregnant and have avoided taking anything for reflux, besides drinking baking soda + water occasionally (which tastes gross but has helped). At my last checkup the MD told me it was okay for me to take Omeprazole. He gave me a long-winded discussion about how although it is a class 3 drug it really is that only because it is so cheap (15 a month) and drug companies are not going to do a lot of studies because there isn't a major financial incentive. He said Omeprazole is essentially the same thing as some accepted class 2 drugs that are more expensive.

Long story short, last night I woke up choking on my gastric contents and need to can't take it any longer. I was all set to buy Omeprazole today but the student pharmacist made me nervous at CVS and said he doesn't know of any pregnant people who ever took it and that I should just take tums.

Do any of you take it? Would you recommend Zantac instead? Help please!

Re: anyone taking Omeprazole for reflux?

  • I've taken Omeprazole in non pregnant life for reflux and I"m currently now doing Zantac.  They work in different ways, just FYI.  People have different ideas of how effective the Zantac/ranitidine is...the pharmacist scoffed at it and my OB said it was fine.  Omeprazole can also be bought at Costco, just FYI.  If your doc recommends it, I would think it's fine because they went to school for a long time to learn about these things....or failing that call them and give them your concerns and ask their advice.  It may also be that since you are looking at taking this short term (depending on how far along you are in your 3rd tri) it might not be a big deal.

    Good luck!

  • I take pepcid.  I had a pharmacist almost not give me my prescription for estradiol when I was pregnant from our IVF cycle.  They literally look and see what class it is to check if it's safe.  The doctor wouldn't tell you to take something that isn't safe.

  • My ob recommended Zantac or Pepcid.
  • I take Zantac and it takes the reflux away pretty quickly.  I take it every night before I go to bed, based on my doctor's advice.

  • A bunch of those drugs came out over the counter a few years ago. Prilosec used to be rx only. I took Zantac for a while but had to move up to Nexium when the baby got bigger.

  • I have done both, neither totally works for me. My OB said I can take any acid reflux meds, but never pepto. So I've been experimenting trying to find one or a combo that works. No matter what I take I still need a few tums through out the day though.

  • There is new research out showing that Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI's) like omeperazole and pantoprazole are causing cardiac/lung defects in babies--a friend's daughter recently passed away b/c of this.

I would take something more along the lines of tums, papaya enzyme, or just eating plain papaya. If those don't help--try zantac 150 once to twice a day.

  • Lurker here from 2nd trimester- I have GERD and have been taking Omeprazole for about 2 years and all the OBs in my practice as well as 2 of the pharmacists at my pharmacy have given the green light for me to continue taking it.  I haven't had heartburn issues yet this entire pregnancy but I know it would be a different story if I couldn't take the Omeprazole.  Heartburn sucks so I hope you find relief soon! • My heartburn was so bad and Zantac wasn't cutting it (especially at night) so my doc suggested Omeprazole or Nexium. Within a few days of taking the Ompeprazole, my life changed! I can eat again and I have hardly any heartburn or reflux anymore. I trust my doctor on this.

Did the studies indicate what trimester the PPIs were taken in?  There are some drugs that are not safe in first tri but are fine in third or second.

We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013.  We love her to pieces.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011.  She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.

  • thank you all for the thoughtful advice!

I was going to say something along the lines of this. The other one's PP's are mentioning like Pepcid and Zantac are H2 blockers and as far as I've seen are the first line before PPI's are prescribed.

  • I was on it prior to pregnancy and switched to Zantac after my BFP. Eventually, I did have to go back to it, with my midwifes ok. Zantac and Tums just couldn't cut it. She told me the same thing, that they haven't pursued reclassification of the drug because it's not worth the cost of testing, but that it is very similar to some class 2's.

  • Im on Zantac and Reglan because my relfux/heartburn has gotten so bad! I think maybe the student pharmacist should mind his own... your doc would not suggest something if it was going to harm you or your baby :)
