Tantrums

Good God! These tantrums are insane. H throws herself on the floor and arches her back flopping all over the place. She screams and cries over everything. The only thing that makes her stop is a bottle. I have tried ignoring her, distracting her, all teething remedies to no avail. Anyone else in the same boat, misery loves company.

Re: Tantrums

  • Yeah, it seems like everything scares her now. Any cough or sneeze sends her screaming into my arms. I just can't figure this kid out anymore.

  • DS will slam his head face first into the floor if he doesn't get what he wants and then cries because he hit his head.  It is a phase.  Until around 2 1/2 and then the real temper tantrums start.

That's right I just gave you a "just you wait..."

  • There bad here too, especially any time a diaper change is involved.  When I tell her to sit in the tub, when I put her down when she wants to be up, or pick her up when she wants to be down. She's impossible to please at this point. Redirection or distraction seems to work the best, but only for a second or two.

  • Yeah. Alastair has started climbing. Heaven forbid you take him off the couch so he doesn't fall. Or change his diaper. Or, the worst offense of all, drink out of a bottle.
He is teething as well, which does not help at all.

What do you do when he hits his head? I feel bad and want to console her, but I don't want to do anything to encourage the fit.

He doesn't want to be consoled because by then he is mad that he hurt himself.  I try not to give it attention and try to redirect, that is all you can really do at this stage.

  • IMO like jonny said, redirect, be form, say no and then ignore unless there's a serious safety issue. I remove myself from their line of sight. They're learning cause and effect right now so if what they're doing doesn't get the desired result they'll wind down and eventually they stop. Then start again when they realize they can say no and make their own choices, same response will get them to figure out they need a different tactic. By 2 when I could see him winding up and also when he was being good and got something special I would say "Good things happen to good little boys" and he eventually made the connection and that would usually get him to calm down.
  • I've got a stomper.  He is so funny watching him stomp his little feet with all his might.. I have no idea where he even learned to do that!

So far, ignoring any tantrums seems to be working.  That's when it pays that his attention span is about 5 seconds.. he forgets he is mad and moves on quickly!

  • OMG it's bad. I've learned that it's not as bad as it looks though. If I set her down on the floor so she doesn't get hurt and walk away it usually subsides quickly.
