Natural Birth

Overdue and desperate

Hi ladies, I lurk here often and I've posted a few times.

Im 41.4 weeks and feeling defeated. I really wanted to wait for this baby to come on its own but I feel done. I never thought I would get to this point!

I am out of patience and extremely tired! This baby feels huge now....which by the way the u/s says baby is a little big for me....which doesn't scared me but I feel like at the end of my rope ready to call my OB and just say get it out!!

I also feel so alone in this. Everyone seems to just jump on the induction wagon and here I have waited in an attempt to do what I think it's best for this kid but I feel like I'm being punished for trying to do the right thing....sorry I am sounding so dramatic but I'm just so upset this isn't happening on its own.

Re: Overdue and desperate

  • I'm so sorry that you're feeling defeated! It gets to hard at the end. You have done a great thing for your sweet baby by giving him/her time. I wish you a wonderful last few days of pregnancy -- who knows, you could go into labor in 5 minutes... you just never know! :)

  • Going to post a couple of things that worked with my last pregnancy.

Caulophyllum and Cimicifuga (the homeopathic versions of blue and black cohosh.)

Also Castor Oil. It's nasty. But these 3 things in combination will help.

    Good luck!!!

  • I only suggest castor oil as a SUPER last resort. It gave me horrible diarrhea, and I don't know if this is true, but I've heard people say it can cause the baby to have meconium...but like I said, I've never read or heard that from a reputable source. The tummy trouble was bad, tho so be warned.

Maybe try nipple stim, have lots of sex, take a brisk walk.

  • I know many people on this board are not a fan of striping membranes but I think that worked for me...in combination with lots of sex and thai food!

  • I used castor oil with my last pregnancy at one day past 42 weeks. It was getting to the point where my midwifes back up doctor was saying we should schedule a repeat c-section and I told him to give me through the weekend. Three doses of castor oil later my baby was in my arms Sunday morning sans the c-section. However, like PP said, use it as a last resort! The diarrhea was terrible as was the resulting hemorrhoid, which was the only thing I would say was painful for the entire labor during my pushing phase.

  • No direct experience but I have heard that castor oil is great to get things started.  A friend used it when her water broke but she did not have any contractions for 10+ hours.  It got her labor going and she was able to deliver naturally with her midwife.   A better resort at this time would be lots of sex and maybe nipple stimulation.  I am so sorry you feel defeated but try to stay positive and  soon you will have a wonderful LO in your arms!
  • I don't know if this helps you feel any better but recent studies have shown that the average gestation is 41 1/7 weeks. So 41 weeks and 1 day. If you go off of that you're only 3 days past your due date.
Hang in there and try to stay positive.

  • just know your body will NOT grow a baby too big for you to birth naturally! ultrasound measurements of size are rarely close to accurate and can be off by a few pounds. medical induction will actually INCREASE your risk of having your baby get stuck and not fit through your pelvis. if you must, black and blue cohosh with nipple stimulation is essentially a surefire way to induce at home, but you are better off waiting :)

  • I know how you feel :( My first baby I was induced with at 42 weeks. In the days prior to that, I was so done with everything and emotional.

Someone at the grocery store asked when my due date was and I cried on the drive home.

I totally know how you feel about the 'induction wagon' too, I probably would have held off longer but it just felt like everyone had had their babies by that point and no one went past 42 weeks, but in the months after I had my baby I realized I wasn't alone.

If your dr mentions induction, say you will come in every few days for monitoring (nst's, blood pressure checks, make sure theres no protein in your urine etc) to make sure everythings going well, but you really dont need to be induced as long as you're both healthy.  You will feel so much happier in the end if you just wait .  It will be ANY DAY NOW, for real.  Its not worth being induced if you are about to go into labor on your own

That stuff might work for some people, but nothing other than a medical induction will actually put you into labor for sure. I started the cohosh tinctures at 41 weeks and they didnt work

  • Take black and blue cohosh.

See a chiropractor ASAP--THIS is the biggest one. If your spine and/or pelvis are out of alignment baby cannot descend properly into the birth canal which can inhibit labor from starting naturally or can jeopardize your chances at a vaginal birth.

Walk, walk, walk, and have sex.

Take red raspberry leaves and insert EPO vaginally.

Also--know that outside of extenuating circumstances, your body won't make a baby that it cannot birth. Try to stay positive! Baby will be here before you know it.

  • I feel like your body will do what it needs to do. I held off as long as I could but ended up being induced at 41w6d. The induction didn't work, I had 2 doses of Cytotec throughout the night and the next morning started pitocin and was soon at the max dose where I stayed for quite a few hours, I was having contractions that looked good on the monitor but I wasn't even feeling. The contractions never did anything and I never dilated past "barely 1 cm". I ended up with a C-section.

I used to believe that your body would not grow a baby too big for you to birth and I waited and tried everything to go into labor. I even talked to the nurse about what happened back in the day before inductions and C-sections if you didn't go into labor and if she really thought people just died, which I didn't believe. I was so over it.

In the end my doctor decided that baby's head was just too big to drop into my pelvis. Thank goodness I had a C-section. I don't know what would have happened to us if this had happened before C-sections.

I didn't get the birth I planned for but at least we're alive and well! Do what you can for the birth you want but remember that a healthy mom and healthy baby is the ultimate goal. You'll be fine!

  • In all seriousness, sperm has prostaglandins that soften/ripen the cervix. This is the only thing that I'm sure that helps without a down side.

  • I agree with the suggestion of seeing a chiropractor. Not for the exact same reasons as listed above, but they would be on the list.

    Baby #3- ????? (ttc soon)

  • I agree with the other posters who recommended EPO, cohosh tinctures, sex, and walking. Castor Oil was also my last resort, but I did not need it. I went into labor at 41w1d after acupressure (not acupuncture) treatment. My midwives recommended the practitioner and she was amazing! They said that she had an amazing track record with them and they were right!
