Help me with computer purchase! (rp from WM)

DH and I really need a new home computer. We're thinking of replacing our desktop with a nice laptop. I am a technological idiot and am a purchase-researcher who hasn't researched ANYTHING yet, but am half-thinking of just buying something this weekend. Baby is due soon and I want to get stuff DONE!

We mostly use the home computer just for very basic stuff--internet, some word processing--plus storing/working with photos and possibly video. No gaming or anything right now. I don't want a super basic machine as I want something with enough memory and "new" features that it will last us for awhile before being totally outdated (so, you know, like at least a couple weeks). :)

I am thinking of switching from home PC to a Mac, but not sure. Tips? Advice? Recommendations?

    I got a Mac about 2 months ago and I cannot say enough about it!  Plus I love that I can take classes at the Apple Store and learn even more (I'm by no means tech savvy).  I do alot of photo and video editing and the Mac is meeting/exceeding my needs.  I was hesitant cuz of the price but honestly it was well worth the money.  I'm never going back to a windows-based computer.

    Mac mac mac esp if you want to work w/ photos & video (imovie & idvd are great, I'm a novice & can use them pretty well) and if you have other mac products (ipad, iphone, ipods, etc). It is nice to have everything talk easily to each other. If you have other devices that are windows based, you might want a windows computer.
