Exercise?

Any moms of twins exercising?  My OB said I was good to exercise but I have been so sick with M/S and exhausted that I have not made it to the gym.  Now that the M/S is starting to subside I am starting to want to go to the gym but I am exhausted.  Does exercise give you more energy or are you just wiped out afterwards.  I ran 3-4 times per week and did yogilates 1x per week pre-pregnancy.  What exercise do you do?  Thinking I can start out walking?  Also, don't really have an appetite so I am worrying about burning calories and then not gaining enough....thoughts?

  • I was able to run until 18 weeks. Since then I have switched to walking or using the elliptical. Over the last couple of weeks I have had to really lessen the intensity even more than I already had and generally don't workout longer than 45 minutes. I have found that 2 days of exercise then 1 day of rest seems to work. If I am tired, I skip that day or go for a short walk. It's so very important to listen to your body. I have had no problems with weight gain. Starting at 12 weeks is when I started to put on weight (maybe 1 pound prior to that) since that's when my appetite really started to pick up.

  • I was able to do elliptical/walk on the treadmill until somewhere around 22-24 weeks. At that point I couldn't really make it through my workday if I had been to the gym in the morning so I quit the gym. Then at around 28 weeks the swelling in my feet and ankles started so I wouldn't have wanted to work out anyway. At this point, the thought of doing any physical activity with almost 13 lbs of baby in me is laughable.

    ETA: I was probably only getting around 17 or 1800 calories a day in the first tri and I had no problem putting on weight, even with the light to moderate exercise 2-3 times a week.

  • I did a prenatal workout video by Denise Austin about 3 times a week up until I hit the third trimester. Then it started to become more few and far between. Now starting just this week it hurts to walk, so exercise is a no go

  • I did a prenatal DVD a few times. My doctor OK-ed exercise but I just couldn't, I was too tired to do anything more strenuous.

  • I was definitely too exhausted to do any exercise during first tri.  I was barely able to function.  I started to feel much better around the start of second tri, so I started exercising again.  I did water aerobics 3x a week.  I have to say, I think it was the perfect exercise for a twin pregnancy.  No risk of falling, you can't get overheated, and as I got bigger, letting the water support my belly was a huge relief.  I went to my last class the week of my induction.

    My MFM was really pleased with the level of exercise I got and felt that it contributed to my relatively uneventful pregnancy.

  • Thanks....I think I will give it a try next week.....walking or the elliptical.

  • I kept up with tae bo and other cardio until I was about 16-18w, around in there, when my OB recommended something gentler/lower impact, so from then on I did walking as long as I could. I tried to go 3-4 times a week for maybe 20-30 minutes. By 34w I couldn't walk anymore (like even around my house without triggering painful contractions) but I was doing the 20-min walks till 30-32ish wks. I just had to take a lot more little breaks by the end. :)
