Routine ultrasounds

Are there any more routine ultrasounds after the anatomy scan? So far I had a dating scan at the very beginning of my pregnancy and an anatomy scan. I am 24 weeks now. Will I get to see my baby again at some point? I totally forgot to ask my doctor at my last visit and am curious!

Re: Routine ultrasounds

  • They usually do one a few weeks before baby comes to check positioning, etc.

  • I think I'm having another one at 28 weeks for them to check if my placenta moved up because I have partial previa.  If I did not have that then I don't think I would be having another one with my doctor's office. You could go to a private imaging place and pay for an elective 3/4D ultrasound, but I think once the baby gets so big, you can only see their face or individual parts-not the whole baby.
  • Some doctors do a growth ultrasound towards the end of your pregnancy. Some do it by a case by case basis. Some don't do one at all.

  • In my first pregnancy, no.

In my second pregnancy, my doctor did one around 34 weeks to check position, cord, etc. But, he didn't do an anatomy scan as "routine" and I had to specifically request one. He just did the early dating one and the later position one.

In this one... probably not. My OB doesn't do in-house ultrasounds and I will probably refuse any future ones he suggests unless he says it's important.

  • The 20 week would have been our last one but LO has a dilated kidney so we'll have at least one more to check on that.  I think it is pretty typical to not check again though!
  • This depends on your doctor, your insurance, and your pregnancy. The only way to know is to ask your doctor or insurance company.

  • Where I go, they don't do any more unless your A/S was abnormal.  My SIL had one at 32ish weeks though because she was huge and they wanted to check the baby's size.

Exactly this.  My cousin had an U/S at 34 weeks because he insurance allowed it.  My A/S was my last one because my insurance does not want to pay for another one unless there is a need.  I was bummed to find that out!

  • Routine for me.... because of the GD, Kaiser considers it high risk - and I get dopplers every two weeks. Others might get a U/S.

  • Not at my practice.. Unless something is wrong. They can tell by feeling and where the heart beat is for baby's position. Last pregnancy... I could even tell the positioning by baby's hiccups and I could cup his little butt. :

  • With dd, they did an u/s late in week 35 because the dr "freaked" that my measurement dropped by a few inches -- the u/s determined the measurement dropped because she had dropped so low in my pelvis that even with tilting the u/s table to have my feet higher than my head the u/s tech couldn't get her head out of my pelvis far enough to measure her head.  That u/s ended up being about 4-5 days before she was born.

With ds1, they did a couple u/s in weeks 28-32 only because I had ptl contractions and was in the hospital  on two different occassions for monitoring.

This one I'm scheduled for a f/u u/s and a fetal echocardiogram so I should be seeing Pip-Squeak at least 2 more times before he's born.  However, these are due to Pip-Squeak having a 99+% chance of having d/s.

There are no routine u/s after the "big" one -- I believe all u/s after that are in response to potential problems -- whether monitoring/following up on a concern or to check the baby (position, development in event of ptl/pre e/etc, or following injury to mom)

  • I only had a late U/S with DD1 because her movement dropped rapidly one day and they were checking on her and I took a nonstress test along with it.

  • My doc does one at 8 wks, 20 wks and 34 wks.

I have to get another one done at 24 wks though since we couldn't see her lip.

  • My doc said I will get u/s every 4 weeks, then switch to every 2 weeks later in 3rd tri. I don't know if that's the norm at his practice or if it's because I had IVF and I'll turn 40 before I give birth so I'm considered higher risk.

  • For non-high risk pregnancies, my doctor's office does them at 12 weeks (preliminary scan), 20 weeks (anatomy and measurements scan) and 36 weeks (positioning). I'm sure if I really wanted to and was willing to pay for it, they'd schedule me for an extra one or two. Just not sure we can afford it at this point and I've had no reason to worry anything's wrong, so we'll just wait it out until the next one. :)
