  • What's with all the weird name posts lately?  Sounds like MUD to me.

  • I don't care for either, but if I had to pick Aniya sounds better. Are you really serious about Elliannuh? Remember, one day your child will have to fill out a job application and hand out her resume.
  • Oh hai, you joined today and have 2 posts.  Methinks someone is feeding into the name dramz.

  • I don't think the race matters.  Last name might--sometimes a weird combo might raise some eyebrows, but I think you should pick a name based on what you like.

Aniya is pronounced, what, Ah-neye-ah?  That's ok.

I actually like Eliana, if that's what you simplify it to.  I wouldn't spell it the way you have it.  I honestly can't think of any real name that ends in "nnuh."  Just do "nah" or "na."  (I.e., the name is Susannah, not Susannuh.)

  • Maybe I'm showing my ignorance here, but I don't see how your daughter being bi-racial has anything to do with what you name her?

That being said, I like Aniya better. Elliannuh is pretty when you say it but is spelled in a way that is pretty busy and hard to read/type. I might like it better if it was spelled differently.

If you would like to acknowledge her heritage in some way you can look up traditional first and last names for wherever you and your SO's ancestors/relatives are from originally.

Say, for instance, a name from Africa and a name from Japan (I have no idea where either of you guys have roots obviously but I am just trying to be clear in my, hopefully helpful, advice) and pick, between the two of you, which name you like in which place best. Many traditional names have modern spellings. The important thing is that you are both happy with the name choice!

For what is is worth,  Eliana is Hebrew and Aniya is Slavic. Personally, I like the (possibly Nordic, possibly made up) spelling of Illyana best.

    Good Luck!

  • I have a feeling I'm being sucked in, but just incase you're seriously looking for opinions- Aniya is definitely better than Elliannuh. I have to agree with PP's though. Your race/child's race/baby daddy's race has nothing to do with how you name your child.

I think race should have something to do with the name. I think a Caucasian "Harpreet" would be kind of weird.. or a Caucasian "Lafawnda"

Can I vote for Lafawnda?  I really want to.  That's the best name in this thread.

Lafawnda and Harprett is a horrible name period. It doesn't matter what race you are.

  • I really like the name Aniya. It's unusual without being over the top. Elliannuh sounds pretty, but no offense, that spelling screams trashy reality tv star to me, and at first glance looks like a boys name.

Also, as people have pointed out, we really need to know the ethnicities involved, since "bi-racial" is totally vague.

that being said, both names are VERY pretty! but i do agree that Elliannuh is spelled a little difficult.

  • I hate both names as a biracial woman..and honestly would never even consider either for my child..Go to starbucks and right those names down on the ticket. Listen to some try to pronounce them...I like unique..but names that are impossible not so much

This is a great idea for those people who like unusually spelled names! Never would have thought to do that.
