ST+Ms: Did your hair fall out after baby?

I'm REALLY enjoying my fabulously thick hair at the moment... a great side effect of pregnancy, right?  However, I'm really worried about it falling out after baby. I have very fine hair, so I'm very frightened.

ST+Ms, did yours fall out?  When did it start and how long did it last?  Did you ever have thick hair again?

Re: ST+Ms: Did your hair fall out after baby?

  • I think it did a little bit but pretty slowly. I dont think I ever lost all of it, and definitely not liek some women (clumps etc). But, I also never weaned and I think BFing can extend that.

  • I'm hoping since my hair still looks like crap [I never got that thick glowing hair] I get to skip loosing it too. I'll be super ticked if I loose my crappy hair.
  • YES. bad. it sucked. it started about 4 months post-baby and lasted (too) long!! but it never made my hair look different, it was just so annoying having hair everywhere!

This!  Took the words right out of my mouth...

My hair is the same but more dry... so if it then proceeds to fall out, I won't be a happy camper...

THIS!  It is a horrible experience.  One morning I woke up and my scalp was SO SORE.  2 days later, the hair started falling out.

It's a wonder I wasn't bald!  (Honestly, my hair did not look too different, just not as full) I heard there is nothing you can do about it either.

Thats one of the things I am NOT looking forward to.  I hear it doesnt happen to everyone so maybe I will luck up this time.

  • It didn't fall out in clumps or anything.  I just shed a lot more.  It was really noticeable when I brushed it after my shower.  It didn't last that long, and I didn't notice less hair on my head.  Just annoying to always be picking hair off my shirt and stuff.
  • It happened really bad to my mom, and no doubt will happen to me. Some people tell me to keep taking pre-natals after, or biotin, its supposed to keep the hair loss to a minimum. I'm gonna try it, figure it cant hurt.

    This was my experience too.

  • Mine fell out like crazy.  I didn't lose clumps, but I plugged up the shower drain a lot and had to clean out my brush like every other day.  I never noticed any difference in appearance with my hair though.

  • My dr and hairdresser both told me that your hair falls out as a result of abruptly stopping prenatal vitamins. If you gradually stop taking the vitamins, you will have less hair loss. Now this is just what I've been told and don't experience since I'm a FTM. .
  • Mine didn't with ds1 but this whole pregnancy I have been losing hair like crazy!  I am so glad I have thick hair or I'd be bald.  So I am really hoping that it doesn't decide to keep falling out after he is born becasue it just started to slow down.

  • Mine started falling out like crazy around 4 months.  It was everywhere!  It didn't look any different, but cleaning up after myself was a pain lol.  And since I was BFing I never stopped taking prenatals so that didn't have any effect for me.

  • Yup, mine did. And it was my least favorite post pregnancy thing. It started when DS was 3-4 months and fell out for a long time. I had a ring of super short spikey hairs around my hairline forever. I have super thick, long hair so it took a long time to get back to normal. And yes, my hair went back to its original thickness. Thank goodness.

  • Not that I noticed.  But I also have a lot of hair to begin with and I didn't notice any changes to it during pregnancy.

  • Mine fell out like crazy when I stopped BFing.  It was such a bad experience.  I was going to talk to the midwife about it this time around.
  • YES!!!!!!  I shedded for a good couple of months.  I have pretty thick hair to begin with, but I was worried there for a moment. lol.

Also I got ALOT of breakage towards the front of my hair.  Hairbands became my BFF for a while.

  • Right around the 4 month mark I started shedding a. lot.  I could run my fingers through my hair and pretty much pull out handfuls.  I have really thick hair to start with, so it was actually kind of a relief to lose some.  I never did get a bald spot like I've heard can happen though.

  • Yep, at about 5 months. My hair is still very thick. I know women who had bald patches, though.

  • I shed a lot of hair, but I've always had thick hair and continued to after pg. My hair texture permently changed thanks to pg. It went from straight with plenty of body, to wavy/curly with a coarser texture. I've noticed my hair has become even more coarse during this pg and a bit more curly.

  • I shed like crazy after both of mine were born....the shower would be full when I washed it!! It was crazy! And even more fun when it grew back in, especially in the front with all the short pieces everywhere.

  • I lost A LOT of hair starting about 8 weeks after my son was born.  It never fell out in clumps or anything, but I just kept shedding and shedding!  I could tell that the front of my hair was WAY more thin than it had ever been.  My husband and mom noticed too but it wasn't like I had bald spots or anything.  It probably didn't go back to completely normal until my son was about 8 months old?  It wasn't horrible but I will DEFINITELY be stocking up on some thickening hair product this time around! Smile

Pregnancy can actually change the cycle of hair growth. It's not just the vitamins. I've been taking PNVs for 3 years. It's the pregnancy that makes me stop shedding. I went back to shedding normally, nothing drastic, after DS was born. Now I don't shed.

This.  It doesn't fall out in clumps, you just shed what you should have been naturally shedding for the past 9+ months.  Your hair won't be any thinner than it was pre-pregnancy and you won't look like you're going bald or anything, don't worry =)  It's just annoying.  My friend calls it the "postpartum hair exodus" ha ha.

  • I have super thick hair that falls out pretty frequently. I didn't notice it falling out more than usual anyways. I also got pregnant 6 months Post partum.
  • mine did, It felt like I would go bald when i would look at the amounts falling out.  I dont remember when it stopped but I did end up with thinner hair after than I had pre-pregnancy.  It has thickened a lot this pregnancy too, I hope it doesnt fall out and become even thinner after!

  • I have very fine hair and not a lot of hair and I definitely got some nice growth with DS but the losing it sucked so bad and I lost a lot of hair around my forehead and its now growing back and it sucks.. I legit have mini mini bangs. It's so horrible. I haven't gotten a nice head of hair with this pregnancy like I did with DS so I'm hoping I won't lose much.

Same here. I didn't have bald spots or anything, just noticed I shed a TON and the shower was kinda gross for a few months.

I stayed on the prenatals the entire time I nursed (I quit nursing while pregnant with this baby, so on prenatals for at least three years now) and my hair fell out everywhere at about 4 months post partum.  It's just hormones adjusting.  It's not like you go bald, just all the extra hair you grew comes out.  It's a shedding mess, but not a big deal.
