Infertility

Baseline and TINY freak out!

I had my baseline appointment this morning. My lining is thin.  My ovaries are cyst-free and have small follicles.  My E2 was <25 (apparently, my lab doesn't report levels lower than 25...idk?!).  I was given the a-okay to start stims on SATURDAY!!  Follistim 300iu and Menopur 75iu.  I watched the video again on the Follistim pen and I am feeling less nervous.

Now for the tiny freak out.  So, when my big box of drugs came in the mail, I just checked to make sure I got all of my drugs.  Lupron, Follistim, Menopur, Crinone, Vivelle, Ovidrel, two antibiotics...the gang's all here!  Tonight, I realized that I didn't get the syringes or needles for the Menopur.  They sent the Q-caps...but nothing else.  Kind of FREAKING OUT.  It wouldn't be a big deal, except tomorrow is a holiday!

Has anyone given the Menopur with insulin syringes?!  Because Lord knows I have plenty of those...

Re: Baseline and TINY freak out!

  • The insulin syringes should work though the only thing I'd be worried about is how little fluid they hold. You might have to do two injections to get the full dose.

  • Insulin syringes will be fine. As long as you have the 1ML syringes- you're golden. The Menopur gets mixed with 1ML of SC. If you're worries about the syringes being full, you can mix it with 0.9ML SC. That 0.1 won't make a difference in the reconstitution.

You can use 0.5ML syringes.. it's just two shots.

You would do them the same. Take 0.5ML of air into the syringe, plunge into the SC, pull out without SC, repeat so that there's 1ML total of air. Then pull back 0.5ML of fluid into each syringe, deposit each into the Menopur, pull back 0.5ML of mixed fluid into each syringe.

Is your RE's office open tomorrow morning? I'm sure they have 1ML syringes there you could have!

  • I would call the dr office and the pharmacy on Friday.  Someone should be open.  Wouldn't it be cool if there was a Black Friday sale on IF meds?  That I might camp out for!

Thank you so much for the offer.  For now, my plan is to follow PP advice about using my 0.5ml syringes (and call and scold my pharmacy).  I truly appreciate you though!

Two shots.  You are the smartest woman alive.  Thanks for talking me off the ledge.  My RE is open tomorrow and Friday.  They are 2.5 hours away though.  Doing two shots sounds better than making that drive an extra time.

  • Hi! I was worried about running out of syringes and my regular pharmacy sells syringes over the counter from the pharmacist for a couple dollars. He had several sizes. No need to go to your RE so far away!
    Lil'mamaz was born on Aug 21, 2014! She's PERFECT!

It's been a long road to here...
    Me (43) and J (45) - same sex couple. And we don't feel 40+!
    June'12 - First RE Visit
    Sept. '12 - Tubes removed
    Dec. '12 - Donor Egg/Donor Sperm IVF Cycle - 4 good embies!
Dec. '12 - Fresh transfer, BFP! EDD 8/29/13
Mar. '13 - Missed m/c at 16w1d, baby boy stopped growing at 15w4d
Loss due to umbilical cord clot...baby was perfect. :(
    Jul '13 - FET#1 - c/p
    Sept. '13 - FET#2 - BFN
    Dec.' 2, 2013 - FET#3 with our last chance embie - BFP!!!
    Dec' 26, 2013 - hb!!
EDD 8/20/14 with a baby girl!
    Little S was born on 8/21/14 - 8lb, 14 oz and 20 inches long.
We live in Seattle and used SRM for our donor egg IVF cycle

  • I've run out of syringes before and have been able to schmooze my way into getting extras from CVS pharmacy but the needles may be another story. If you dont start until Saturday you can probably call your RE's office tomorrow (Friday) and ask them to call in an order for needles and syringes.

I agree with PPs about using the insulin syringes but when I was faced with that I was not exactly sure I wanted to do that, IMO at least. Since I wouldn't be able to use the QCaps if using the insulin syringe, it'd have to either be injected into all the vials (I was on 150iu, so 2 powders) prior to my skin....or I'd have to use two syringes in the process (one to mix, then one to draw out and inject) I'm a little OCD about the way I like things done and I wasn't really able to make myself get on board with that, LOL

    Good luck :)
