Speaking of puffs/finger foods...

We're not doing BLW, mostly because I never had enough time to really read about it and figure out what I'm doing...

So I'm a little clueless about finger foods. We have started on puffs, but I don't know what to do next. What kinds of finger foods do you give LO?

Re: Speaking of puffs/finger foods...

  • We haven't started giving that many finger foods to DD yet, mostly because I forget.  With DS, he started on purees but by the time he was 8 months old he was pretty much over it and just wanted what we had.  You can really give them almost anything.  DD has had slices of green and red pepper, broccoli, sweet potato fries, quarters of pears and apples.  She doesn't ingest much, mostly she is just sucking on them.  She did surprise me once and ate almost an entire zucchini muffin.

Continue to avoid honey and (if your pedi says to) peanuts and eggs, although my pedi said both of those are fine in terms of allergies.  His concern about peanut butter has more to do with choking since its so thick and sticky.

  • Avocado, roasted sweet potato sticks, and roasted zucchini spears have been hits. Rice cakes with hummus or cream cheese toast are both referred to as baby crack in this house, both kids go nuts for it. Tortellini, steamed broccoli, really ripe pear or banana. We do do BLW and he loves it, so really he has had everything. Tonight he ate almost a whole mini bread bowl with sloppy joe filling!

  • I just started trying this out too. I gave him some bread with jam little pieces and he chewed and swallowed pretty good. I get nervous because of choking...I was going to buy puffs today, but the box says 12 months...so I didn't

He also had some spaghetti, mostly playing with it.

    Also is anyone starting juices?

  • My pedi said they recommend no juice at all.  I figure why start the habit if he's happy with water?

I'd like to start puffs, but DS isn't crawling yet and that's what the box says...I don't know how big a deal it is to wait for him to crawl?

  • N loves feeding himself and has had several things. He had puffs before he could crawl, but I trusted how well he could handle them. (He started crawling last week, but has had puffs for a month or so now.)

He loves steamed veggies, veggie sticks (those french fry shaped ones that are like chips... I'm totally blanking on the name), fruit (sliced grapes, cantaloupe, banana, etc).

ETA: No juice here. He's happy with breastmilk and water. I don't see the point.

  • I agree with PP.  Lilah LOVES puffs, and has been eating those and cheerios for at least 6 weeks.  I just trusted where she was at, and how she could do with them.  I think thats the best thing, trusting your baby, and meeting them where they are at.  We are trying some "teething cookies" or whatever tomorrow!
