Toddlers: 24 Months+

Christmas gift WWYD?

DD has been asking for a pink bike since the summer, a few months ago she saw a kid with scooter at a park and now she wants that too.  When ever I ask her what she's going to ask santa for it's always a pink bike and a scooter.  We brought her to the toy store tonight and she can't peddle the bike.  We're getting her other things so she'll have a nice Christmas, but I'd feel terrible if she asks about the bike or scooter on Christmas morning.  She'll be 3 in March, and she is a strong, active girl.  I don't believe you need to get everything your child asks for for Christmas, but she really seems to want this. WWYD?

  • Where's the clicky?

Get her a pink radio flyer bike that you can push around until she can reach/ navigate the pedals. She won't learn if she doesn't try, right?

  • DD1 got a bike for her 3rd birthday, but it took her a long time to learn to peddle by herself. I'd get her the bike from Santa since that's what she really wants. She 'll learn how to use it with practice.

  • what about a balance bike? those are made for exactly that age - before they learn how to peddle!
  • Meh, I'd get her one and let her realize that you can't get everything you want.  But I'm like that. :)

We do one gift per person, and I've already picked up her dollhouse.  There are other things I'd love to get her, and other things she'd love to have, but she doesn't need all that stuff!

  • DD got a bike last year and couldn't pedal it.  She was thrilled!  She can grow into it.

This is what I was thinking. We are getting DS a trike as his 'big' gift for his 3rd birthday (in January.) He hasn't figured out how to ride one yet but he loves our neighbors and has been asking for one. They'll eventually get it.

dont waste your money--essentially if you do buy a bike just dont put the pedals on which makes it a balance bike.

DD was 4 before she got the hang of pedaling--its not an easy skill for them to learn and its best learned on something that if they do pedal backwards it doesnt stop them which is why a tricycle is best

  • I'd go with a pink bike made for toddlers, but not both. My DD got a bike for her 3rd birthday and she loves it! She pretends she's Bean from Sprout when she rides it.

well I know a lot of toddler who have balance bikes and love them as a stepping stone to a 'big' bike

not much of a difference between a balance bike and not putting the pedals on a small 2 wheeled bike

  • DS got good with the bike out of no where!  One day he couldn't pedal and the next he could.  As for the scooter we picked one up for $5 at a yard sale and he can't ride it.  Totally depends on the kid but I think it's also something they have to practice.

  • My DS did the exact same thing...asked for both. We are going with a regular bike. He also can't pedal but I hope he catches on.

  • We got something like this for DS last year for Christmas (he had just turned 2), and even though he couldn't pedal, he still loved to be pushed.  (And I loved taking him for walks with it... definitely encouraged me to move around more!!)

A few months ago my intelligent mother in law (cough) got him a Razor scooter (the regular kind, with just the two wheels) and couldn't seem to figure out why the kid couldn't ride it.  Gee.  I wonder.  So for his birthday (dec 14), we are giving him the scooter with 3 wheels, so he can ride it w/o worrying about balancing.

  • We got DD a little pinkalicious tricycle for her 2nd birthday and she is bananas for it! She cant pedal it yet but she tries and she sits on it and scoots all over. Also we push her on it and she keeps her feet on the pedals and is learning to pedal. It was a great purchase for us.
