Could my baby be sensitive to dairy?

I'm starting to contemplate going dairy free.  My baby is 6 weeks old and breastfeeding is going well.  However, I'm noticing that in the past week, all of her number 2s have been dark green--not a yellow one that I can remember recently.  i wouldn't say they're frothy or mucusy, just dark green.  My other concern is her skin.  I know baby acne is normal, but she seriously looks like the before pictures of a Proactiv commercial.  Its all red and bumpy on her neck too.  She's eating well and gaining.  She's not spitting up frequently.  She's cranky at night and sometimes will fight the boob, but nothing that I think is unusual for a baby her age.  It's basically the poop and the acne/maybe it's a rash.  Her next doctor's appointment is December 10th and my husband thinks we should just wait.  Maybe now is the time for me to admit a very serious chocolate addiction.  Any thoughts or similar stories?

  • Given that going dairy free is relatively easy and free, I think it's worth a shot if there's any thought that dairy may be an issue.  You'll know within a few weeks if it makes a difference or not.  I too have a very serious chocolate addiction so I feel ya (although it's worth noting there are dairy free ways to get a chocolate fix!).  The good news is most babies will outgrow their dairy sensitivity by 6 months to a year.  I was dairy free for a year; Eleanor now eats dairy (although she's never had straight cow's milk) and does fine.

  • My Little mans #2's changed at about 6 weeks as well they were no longer seedy and had a definite green to them. I asked the doctor and she looked at his diaper and said that it was nothing out of the ordinary, he may just have a slight cold or a virus but as long as he doesn't have a fever and is generally happy and eating well not to worry about it. I think first time moms (my self included) worry about their little ones poop color to much.

As far as the acne goes my little man have some pretty bad acne I was using Dreft for my laundry and my friend recommended switching so I tried out arm&hammer for sensitive skin and it cleared up a lot. I also dabbed a washcloth with some expressed breast milk on his acne (I read that can help) I'm not sure if it was that or the laundry detergent that helped.

I wouldn't worry to much unless she starts a fever or wont eat.

  • Before I went dairy free we had DD's poopy diaper tested and it had blood in it. (We couldn't see the blood, but they could see it under the microscope or whatever they do...)  She was inconsolable day and night and having serious gas issues.  Her poop wasn't really all that abnormal.
  • Green could also be a sign that the baby is drinking too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk. Kellymom should have some good info on how to fix that. Green every once in awhile is normal and fine. You could try going dairy free. A lot of babies are sensitive to the milk protein.
