  My BIL mounted it to the wall.  I hate putting holes in the wall but it is really the only option that is safe.

  Right now it's attached to the rail. I haven't given it much thought to where it'll go when she can pull herself up, etc.

  Ours is on top of a book shelf across the room. If it were super close to the crib, I wouldn't be able to get a full view of his crib and he moves around so much, he'd be moving out of the frame constantly. My SIL has hers mounted to the wall directly opposite the crib (to get a full view).

  Ours is wall mounted too.  It also came with little plastic doohickeys that keep the wire attached to the wall down to the outlet.  I think it'll be pretty tough for him to reach.  I would definitely try to get it out of your LO's reach.

  I installed a shelf above his crib.  I got it at Home Depot, and you just put in two screws on the base, and then slide the shelf over it so you don't see the screws.  It's a pretty small shelf, and looks nice with other knick knacks. 

  Don't leave it on the crib rail, she could grab it to play with and strangle herself with the cord.

  I agree! This is how ours is mounted to her crib rail.
