Breastfeeding

Latch. Unlatch. Repeat.

DS latches and unlatches at every feeding.  Sometimes its not too bad he'll latch on, won't get anything right away and unlatch, then latch on and eat.  Sometimes that can take three or four more tries.  But after every single "meal" he will unlatch and root, so I re-latch him and he immediately unlatches.  We do this dance over and over.  If he's not in a bad mood I can give him his pacifier to sooth that need he has and he'll spit it out in a minute and burp, then we switch to the other side and repeat.  If he's fussy or tired he'll start to scream almost immediately and won't take the pacifier.  I've pumped after feedings to make sure he's getting everything, and I never get more then a few drops.  After a couple of minutes I can usually get him to calm down and relax (when he's really upset) but it seems like he's never really satisfied, with the latch/unlatch dance at the end, its like he wants to stay on longer but if there isn't a steady flow he's not satisfied and won't stay on.

Any thoughts?

Re: Latch. Unlatch. Repeat.

  • When my LO starts the latch/unlatch dance I take that as a sign that she is finished.  Either on that side, or in general.  She gets mad when I take the boob away, but generally quits fussing in a minute or so.  If that was the first side, I burp her (while she cries) then I switch her to the other side.  If that was the second side, I burp her and give it a few minutes.  If she doesn't quit crying, I put her back on.  I just always assume the unlatching means she's done.

  • Is this a new thing?  How old is he?  Do you have spraying milk or does it seem like it take a while for your milk to letdown?

At the beginning of a session - If you don't have spraying milk (overactive letdown) my guess would be that he is just being impatient for your letdown; you could try breast compressions to help things along - and try to relax ;)

If it happens mid-feed or towards the end - he probably just really needs to burp.  Sometimes you have to be "aggressive" in getting burps out ;)

Is this a new thing?  It started about a month and a half ago. How old is he?  12 weeks. Do you have spraying milk or does it seem like it take a while for your milk to letdown? It only take a few seconds before the milk is spraying.  I know when he unlatches at this point its because of the overactive let down.
