July 2013 Moms

Are you going back to work after baby?

I live in Canada and you need to work 600 hours yearly to qualify for mat leave, and this pg was unexpected and I dont have a job... so I'm not going to qualify unless I get a job NOW & start working like crazy.  Its not going to happen so I'm probably going to have to go back to work after my baby is born.

This is foreign to me.  I guess if all you ladies can do it then I will be fine.  Are you planning on staying at home, going back after 6 weeks, 8 weeks? Whats the plan?

I stayed at home with my first son but honestly after 9 months I was getting antsy and felt like he'd have more fun being in daycare with other kids than hanging out at home

Re: Are you going back to work after baby?

  • with my son I went back to work after 9 weeks but hated it so much (my job sucked and hated being away from him) that I started a business and was able to stay at home with him starting at 9 months and I've been a WAHM since.

So yes, I'll be going back to work after baby is born - but that's here in my home.

  • I plan to take a 12 week maternity leave and return to work. I work 3 days a week though so I have a good balance of home/away time.

  • I am the "breadwinner" in my family, so I will definitely go back to work.  I am hoping for 12 weeks maternity leave (I'm technically only entitled to 6, but I'm hoping my boss will be flexible.  He usually is.)

If my FI got an unexpectedly HUGE raise at work, though, I would stay home.  We're talking about him going back for his masters, so hopefully in three or four years I could stay home with any future children.

  • I have to work. I work for the schools so I get my summers off anyway. This baby had perfect timing. I'll most likely return to work in September.

  • I'll be staying home, at least for awhile. I work as a nurse and hope to go back to work part time once the baby is a little older. I really can't wait to stay home, but the loss of my income is going to be a big adjustment for us! I don't think there really is a perfect scenario.

  • I am a SAHM so the work is here with me. With 2 I'm sure it will be fun!

  • I will take 6 weeks off and then start back. I work for a tiny company so it is tough to take longer. I WFH and I work 4 days a week so I will be home with my kids.

  • I'm a teacher so I will ake off till the middle of sept. last times I took 8wks. I used all my sick days and had to have dock days. This time I think I will get to use all sick days and not have to use dock days! I'm happy about that.
  • I am also in Canada. I only work PT, so I am entitled to 6 months off at full top up. The rest of the year I can take 50%.

I love my job, and because its only part time, I will most likely go back to work after 6 or 8 months (driving in the winter sucks, I may wait till nicer weather). I think I will be waiting to see.

  • I hope to be a SAHM, my DH would need a raise for us to live like we are now, but if I need to work part-time, I'm OK with that too.  DH works from home, so we wouldn't have to pay for daycare.

  • I am in school & work PRN at the hospital. I will start school back in August (my last semester!) and return to work then also. Somewhere around 4-5 weeks. Did it with DS also. It's not easy, but do-able.

  • I plan to stay home.  In NYC, child care is so expensive and I make so little money (teacher at a private school) that it's not worth it for me to go back.  For about even money, I'd much rather stay home with the baby!

  • I really don't make a whole lot of money at my current job, but it is teaching, so I'm in the boat with the other ladies happy about the timing.  I really hate the idea of not starting off the school year with my kiddos, though.  I'm not crazy about the current school I work for, so I might be looking for a job elsewhere.  I've also considered looking for a job outside of teaching that is either part-time or WFH.  DH is pretty much on board with me staying home when the baby comes, we just might have to really work on our budget if I just completely stop working.

I don't know if I could be completely unemployed, though.  Hopefully I will find something, teaching or otherwise, that is lower stress and better pay.

  • I am allowed 8 weeks of maternity leave so I'll be taking that and then going back to work.

Luckily I am all set up to work from home if I need to, so I'm going to do that 3 days/week to start and come into the office 2 days/week. I'll have to find child care or someone to watch the baby for those 2 days that I'm in the office.

  • I'm going back to work full time after however many weeks of PTO/Short term disability I have saved up runs out (as of right now between the two its 9-10 weeks, by July it should be closer to 12).  Our health insurance is through my employer and I make significantly more than my H does at this point so that's how its gotta be and I'm okay with that.
  • I'm also a federal employee and I'll be going back to work after 12 weeks.  The benefits are too good to leave!! :)

  • I will take the maximum 12 weeks allowed. I work part time 24hrs/week, but it's a crazy schedule that's all over the place (nights, evenings, weekends, holidays). So I plan to switch to a "per diem" status so I can control my own schedule. Still working 24hrs/week, just on my own terms. It's too crazy of a schedule to keep juggling with 2 kids.

  • I went back with DS at 5w and pumping FT and was fine. It was hard not being with DS all the time, but it was good for me as a person/adult since I loved what I did. Now I'm in school FT and will be going back to school 5w pp again. Granted, it's not 50hrs/wk but it's still a lot of work.

It's perspective- I'm in school for the long term benefit of my family (and necessity, as being married to a FF is not lucrative like a banker, per se). I also really like what I'm doing and I think it will be a good example to my kids.

I am in Canada as well, and will be taking the full 52 weeks, and then hopefully get my real estate license doing at home classes while hubby works. Once completed work part time with that.

  • I will be staying home. I am able to not work now.  My husband  and I run an organization that helps mommies stay home and be with their babies.  It's called the 100. We inspire families and give back.  It has blessed us tremendously!  It's really only for motivated mom's that have a desire to be with their children and raise them.  =)
  • I couldn't do my current job and have a baby. Well, I could, but it would require finding a babysitter who could work a lot of weekends and evenings, along with M-F 8-6.I wouldn't mind if my current employer could find a part time job for me where I wouldn't have so many evenings/weekends.

I am also working on my real estate license, so I hope to already have a client base built up and do that after baby comes. Most likely, I will do that and work a few hours in retail or at a bank. Just something to supplement the income.

My MIL lives close by, but I would rather that she not be the primary caretaker for our baby. My sister is a SAHM who lives close by, so between the two, I should be able to work outside the home part time, and have reliable, flexible childcare at a reasonable rate.

I have worked for my company for 7 yrs but only in this department for 5 months (1 yr at the time of baby's birth). There are others in my department who work part time so I am hopeful.
