Recommend your "play" food.

If your LO has or is getting a kitchen set, what play food did you buy them? I want to make sure DD has a decent amount of food to play with it. Any suggestions on which brands/types you like and would recommend? Anything you'd stay away from?

Re: Recommend your "play" food.

  • I love the Melissa and Doug wooded food, its just so expensive.  We have the set of fruit that you can separate (they hold together with velcro).  I like that I can also use them to teach DD things like whole, half, quarter (since some of the fruit separates in half and some in smaller pieces).  The rest of the play food we have it is plastic.  It isn't great, but it serves the purpose.  I don't recall the brand that we got.  As PP mentioned the felt food is good also.  I think that Ikea has some sets of fabric food.

  • My sister bought some Green Toys food for A today on Zulily. I like the M & D wooden food, but my kid has a habit of chucking wooden things at my head, so until that settles down a bit, he's not getting it. He doesn't care for felt food for some reason, but IKEA has a lot of inexpensive options.

  • We got some of our food from Ikea (felt/soft breakfast set, dessert set, and fish plate), some from Melissa and Doug (felt sandwhiches and wood stir fry set, sushi set, and pizza set), and some from Educo (wooden fruits and veggies).  Some were from consignment sales, some our own purchases, and some gifts.  (When we do something like a kitchen or (this year) a doll house, I let the grandparents know so they can contribute things like food or furniture sets if they want to.)

  • Thanks that's great to know. I was trying to avoid the plastic food, but wasn't too sure what my other options were. Just from googling and whatnot, I had found a lot of the felt food, but I had never heard of that before. When I was little all of my play food was plastic. I'll definitely keep an eye out for MD deals I never pay full price for anything! Lol

  • I actually prefer the plastic food. LO puts them her her mouth to "try it" and they are easily washed, they don't chip paint like M & D, and they don't hurt (people or my wood floor) if they are thrown/dropped. We got the bucket from Target last winter and have been pleased with it. In fact, I felt like there was a good variety in it and LO learned several foods from it before ever seeing/trying them.

  • We have this set from Toys R Us, and DD completely LOVES it:

It's not a huge set, but we didn't want that.  DD doesn't have a play kitchen and she's got so many other toys that this is really a good amount.  Plus it came with a knife and cutting board and all the pieces just velcro together.  DD gets SUCH a kick out of cutting them up now that she has figured out how.

  • I love our wooden toys from Melissa and Doug. We have the fruit set that you can cut apart with a wooden knife (they're held together with velcro) and then a food groups set. Its great quality and I love that it's not plastic. My 3 year old loves the fruit you cut apart.

  • Curious why the consensus AGAINST plastic food?  I would think that's the best kind.  Easy to wash/disinfect once in awhile, and LO can put it in their mouth without it turning into a nasty wet felt mess.  And less hazardous than a hard wooden toy.  What's the reason?

Because plastic is made from oil and could have BPA in it?  Because plastic isn't natural and doesn't biodegrade when we're done with it?  Because wooden toys last longer and don't break as easily?  We happen to have plastic play food, but these are reasons why I prefer wood toys overall.
