Medela Pump In Style vs. Ameda Purely Yours

Help! I'm pumping exclusively and need a better pump! Based on reviews of moms and lactation consultants, I think I have it narrowed down to these two (Medela Pump In Style and the Ameda Purely Yours) and was wondering if anyone could steer me in the right direction? Or if anyone thinks there is a better pump than these two? I've heard the Medela Freestyle is really popular but I just can't afford it :( Thanks so much!

  • I have the Medela PISA and like it a lot. No complaints! Easy to use. Medela has good customer service from what I've experienced. Target and BRU both sell replacement parts for Medela. Not sure if they sell other company's parts.

I also have and love the pisa
  • I have the Ameda.  I've had no problems with it.  I used both Medela and Ameda pumps when my son was in the NICU.  The Medela had the let-down feature, but got moisture (NOT milk) in the tubes and I had to deal with that pretty much every time I pumped.  This isn't hard to deal with, just annoying.  The Ameda doesn't have a let-down feature (but you could simulate this with your speed setting if you wanted) and does not get moisture in the tubes.  However, the Ameda flanges are a sort of all-in-one piece whereas the Medela is not.  This isn't a big deal except when you are cleaning it.  With a flange that comes off, you have easier access to the rest of the assembly.  With a flange that doesn't come off, it can be harder to clean the nooks and crannies.

I don't know that I needed the bag that came with the pump ( I have enough other ones lying around that aren't used) and probably could have gotten away with the pump and a set of flanges.  The rest of the stuff that comes with a pump is just bonus.  I will say that the ice packs that came with the Ameda hold cold longer than anything I've ever put in my lunch bag!

  • I have, and love, the PISA. Definitely recommend it.

I have the Ameda Purely Yours and I love it.  I also love the hand pump feature that you can get with it.  And while it doesn't have a let down feature, you can manually adjust both the speed and level of suction to your liking.  I like that it's a closed system so you don't have to worry about moisture in the tubes.  For the price, I would definitely go with an Ameda again.

This.  I have the ameda PY and I love it.  It is easy to clean and I like the fact that I can adjust the speed and the suction.

  • Keep in mind that the Ameda pump has a much slower speed than the Medela. They have the same suction strength though. Medela goes up to 110 pumps per minute for the letdown phase and Ameda only goes up to 60 per minute. If you need a faster speed for a letdown like me, get the Medela. Ameda is so slow that I can't even get a letdown with it.
