pumping in bathroom ...WWYD?

I went back to work today (I'm a teacher) and right now the only place I could find to pump was the teacher's staff bathroom. It isn't a horribly gross bathroom but still...it's a bathroom. I made sure the parts didn't touch anything but would you keep the milk that was pumped or do you think that's too gross?? It's 9 oz and I hate to waste it. WDYT???

Re: pumping in bathroom ...WWYD?

  • I've pumped in bathrooms too. It's gross but I wouldn't toss the milk. More importantly, you need to meet with the powers that be and find a better solution ASAP. GL.

  • I believe they are supposed to provide you a room with an outlet that locks.

With that said, I would pump in my car before I would use the bathroom. I don't know trust the general publics hygiene.

  • I've pumped in the bathroom while traveling for work, and I kept the milk.  I'd prefer to not pump in a bathroom, but sometimes that is the only place that works.  I wouldn't toss the milk, but I agree with pp about finding a better long term solution.  Legally, the it can't be a bathroom.

One of the rooms at a building I travel to was an old bathroom (still had toilet) but only pumping mom's had a key, so it was cleaned daily and no one used it as a bathroom.  One mom made a huge deal about it still having a toilet and it being illegal, they remodeled the room and took out the toilet.

My mom is a principal, and her teachers pump in their rooms and just put construction paper over the windows.  Is that an option?

  • Funny, I am doing this right now. Standing in a stall pumping with one hand and bumping with the other. I normally go to the car but I parked far away and I am attending an all day training for work. My hands were sanitized before handling parts and milk stored in cooler bag. As long as you take extra sanitary precautions, there no reason not to keep the milk. But I agree that this shouldn't not be a daily routine and you should ask for other arrangements to be made.

This! Your job is supposed to give you some sort of private place so you can pump. Even see if your boss will let you use their office maybe??

  • I wouldn't pump in the bathroom, but that's just me though.

    I pump in my car.

  • Well, because it's a bathroom and there are gross people who don't wash their hands. And even though I washed my hands before, I still had to touch the door handle, etc. and then touch the pump parts. I am also an incredible germaphobe and it's very hard for me to handle stuff like that. Thanks everyone for your responses!!

Agreed, but I wouldn't waste the milk.  I once pumped in the bathroom at a super swanky spa.  But the bathroom was pretty plush.

This...I will never understand why where you pump could affect the milk. It goes from your breasts into bottles, right? Not onto the toilet seat....

    this.

That law only applies to companies with 50 employees or more I believe. Some bosses are assholes. Like mine.

If you work for a school district, then all the employees in the district (including janitors, cafeteria staff, etc. count!)  Do you have an HR department?

I teach and when I pumped, first I used a supply closet, which was better than nothing.  But when it had to be used for something else (our closets double as things a lot because we have no walls in our open design school!), I talked the site tech into the key for the server room.  Tiny room with computer servers, a student desk, and lots of outlets.  It was an awesome pump room!  I'll be using it again soon!  I'd look around and see where else you can find.  I've pumped in my car before too and just rolled up some baby blankets in the windows and put up a sunshade.

No I am not a teacher. We have an HR department, I've been fighting this for weeks. Sad thing is our company policy is very pumping friendly, I just have an awful boss. And the person above her too. I work for a bank and run my own drive through branch. I'm locked in and not allowed to leave so going out to my car is not an option. It's a small branch, since it's only drive through, so there aren't any other rooms to pump in (all other rooms have security cameras). Smart thing would be for my boss to move me to the main branch, but I think that makes too much sense for her to handle.

Sorry.  I got you mixed up with OP (who is a teacher!)  Can you just put a paper or something up in the window where people can only see your face and pump using a cover?  It's not like anyone would even notice from a drive-thru!  :)  Maybe some extra xmas garland!  I hope you can get it figured out!

OP - your school district should have enough people that the law says you get a place other than a bathroom.  You need to fight for it and look around for new places.  Like I said, the server room worked great for me in the end.  I'm assuming there is a reason why you can't just lock your classroom door and pump in there?
