Breastfeeding Class

So I signed up for a breastfeeding class at the hospital and I just found out that my husband can't go to it with me. And of course I'm being whiny and hormonal and just don't want to go if he can't go!

Has anyone taken one yet? Did you find it informative?

Re: Breastfeeding Class

  • I am a FTM and one of the first of my girl friends to have a baby. I found my class super informative and made gave me a lot more confidence about my ability to breast feed and what to expect. I am really glad I went because I was nervous about breast feeding and felt like I didn't know much. I am really glad I went!

  • We had ours a couple of weeks ago, and it was one of the more informative classes we have taken.  As a FTM I think it is definately worth your time.

FWIW, there were several ladies there on their own- no spouse or SO. :)

  • I went to one when I was living overseas, and it was very good.  My husband agreed to go with me to it, but he was completely bored.  It just made me mad that he had agreed (of his own volition!) to go, then zoned out and finally left to go get coffee and snacks.  I remember wishing that he would have just not come in the first place.

I went to another one here in the US last weekend through our hospital without my husband and it was also very good.  It was a lot of review from the other one, and from my reading, but this was the first time I was walked through the process of how to breastfeed and how to line up the baby.

From what I've heard, women who take BFing classes tend to have more success with breastfeeding because having some instruction in advance of needing to do it gives them more confidence.  No statistics--just what I've heard. :-)

  • I personally wouldn't want MH there...what's he gonna do at a breast feeding class? Birth classes are one thing, he's participating in that, but breast feeding? Um, no.

It was extremely helpful especially for my DH. He fully understands now how difficult breastfeeding can be. We know what to expect in the first few days with colostrum and when to expect the milk to come in.  He can help me with positioning the baby, general troubleshooting when I am going to be exhausted and not necessarily think straight, pumping and bottle feeding. We also covered baby sleep patterns and how it affects feedings as well as the most critical time when mothers stop breastfeeding.

Anyway, it was the most useful class (total of 5 hours) we have taken for both of us (we did birthing classes, CPR and parenting basic). I would go with or without him, but plan for a long briefing when you come home!

  • I just went to one on friday night and it was very good, there were a few women there by themselves though. I think it is definitely worth going to, they really teach you a lot. Especially if you are a FTM.

  • here's what your H needs to know how to do to help you BF:

    1. go get baby in the middle of the night

    2. poof your pillow, give you boppy and tall glass of water

    3. return baby to crib

All kidding aside, my H was absolutely instrumental in the labor and delivery, and is a wonderful father....but my H was not involved in the least when it came to my learning how to breastfeed.

  • I haven't and don't really plan on it, but you could always look up your local LLL and find out when they meet. :)

  • I went without my DH and it was totally fine.  I thought the information was useful and went beyond what I had read in books and the "helpful" advice that I have been given.

Kudos to your h for being interested. And the whole "have your h bring the baby to you and put it back when you're done". LOL for me, the odds of that are about equal to him lactating.
