Is Nova too weird?

DH is absolutely in love with the name Nova for a girl. I'm okay with it, and it has some sentimental meaning to us, although I love my first choice more, but I quite like it with the middle name we picked (Sophia). I think it flows really nicely -- Nova Sophia boringlastname. My main concern is that Nova is just too odd. DH argues strenuously that it isn't, but I just really don't want to deal with that look on people's faces when you tell them the name and they don't know what to make of it so they just look politely uncomprehending.

Re: Is Nova too weird?

  • I honestly thought it would be for a boy when I opened the thread.

Also, First name Nova middle name starts with S - my mind automatically thinks Nova Scotia

Overall, I don't like it for a girl. Huh?

  • Nova is NMS but is a legit girl name. I love Sophia as a MN!

  • Makes me think of Northern Virginia (often called NoVA) or the community college (NOVA).  Obviously if you don't live in that area, you won't make those associations, but I'm not really a fan.

  • In a word? Yes. How about as a middle name?

  • I think it is too weird.  For many reasons.  In spanish it means "doesn't go."
  • I think it's weird as a fn, but would work better as a mn.

  • I think Chevy Nova.
    Sorry.
  • It's okay. Unfortunately my head went to the character Novalee Nation from Where the Heart Is.
  • For some reason, when I hear "Nova", all I think is "supernova". I'm sure if I actually knew someone named Nova though, I would be more likely to associate it with that individual. If you like it, go for it. And I think it goes well with Sophia.
  • I'm from Nova Scotia, and my best friend's dog is named Nova, so I am having a hard time getting on board with it as a name for a person.

I could go the middle name route, though.

  • Sorry but I don't like it and think it sounds sing songy with Sophia as a mn.
  • I like Nova and feel like the a makes it feminine too. I'm not so sure about pairing it with Sophia though.

  • I just asked my DH what he thinks of Nova for a girl's name because I knew he'd find it interesting and he goes "if anybody is going to name their girl a Nova that should be me and I am not doing it." He is obsessed with Chevy cars and has redone a few Novas, and is always reading or talking to his brother/dad about Novas..

I wouldn't pick Nova for a girl's FN, maybe a middle name or nick name..

  • I guess I'm the odd man out, I really like it. I think it's edgy and fresh, without being too weird. And, depending on where you live, I don't mind Nova Sophia. If you live in Canada, or Virginia, then no.

Not sure about Nova Sophia... but then I don't really love Sophia.

  • Hmmm, it's okay. And I tend to like unusual names. Not wayyy out there weird, but I do think it has a lot of associations with it, as demonstrated by previous comments, which I think can make it seem weird in people's minds (like if they associate it with cars, for example). You say the name has sentimental meaning to you and your DH. If you don't mind sharing the nature of that meaning, maybe others here can offer alternative suggestions that you both might be comfortable with. For example, if the meaning has to do with space, perhaps there's another space-related name that you might like better, like Lyra, Luna, or a name that means sun, etc..
  • Well... I do think it is weird, but I don't think it is too weird if that makes sense. :) It makes me think of a super nova so I would assume you were a very sciency family. Not a bad thing at all.

I definitely sympathize with wanting an interesting, uncommon first name when you are working with a boring LN. :)

  • I grew up in nova northern va and went to college at 'nova Villanova so it is very odd to hear it as a baby name.

I also think of smoked salmon which is commonly called nova. Or a Chevy.

Needless to say, I would pass.

Offering up Neveah as a name suggestion will not make you popular here. Nova may be off-beat but at least it's not backwards. I like the name Nova but Dh nixed that idea a long time ago.

  • I'm kinda super in love with Nova, but DH tells me it's too "hippy" Sad
  • I know a woman who named her LO nova.  She told me it is a Cree name (but I can't remember what it means).  The woman has Cree heritage, so it suits her LO.

  • Makes me think of the bagel shop.  Bagel with nova and cream cheese.  It is another word for smoked salmon or lox.  Or maybe this is something that is only said in Jewish communities?  My area is heavily Jewish and I hadn't heard the term before I moved here.
