If the voice or face of a childrens character was accused of a crime would you steer your LO away from any this character?
I think about Pee wee-Herman which my mom did have me stop watching. I still feel kind of scurvy when I see things about his character. Bo has the Elmo guitar and loves to bop his head to " la la la la Elmo's world"...now I feel kind of weird knowing the voice is of someone allegedly doing something illegal; so gross, but I will still let Bo play with it! If he knew and could understand the charges then I would steer him away...I think?
Re: S/O childrens characters
DD1 is an Elmo fan, and I don't see any need to steer her away from Elmo or Sesame Street over this. It's not like Kevin Clash is in our house - he's just making a silly voice behind a puppet. What he did or did not do has no direct effect on her.
Now, if it were a "real" person, such as PeeWee Herman, and not the voice of a puppet, I would probably feel a little differently simply because of the role-model aspect of it. DD1 isn't old enough to get that, though.

I had a UO about this once.
The only way children know characters do dirty things is because their parents tell them. I don't think my children need to be involved in a discussion about role models at this point. I mean if O wants to watch Elmo at some point in time, fine. It's not like the guy took his puppet and had some dirty sex act on tv with a minor. I mean come on, his home life is different from his street life. (Bahaha Sesame Street life)
Anyway, I still think that any character on tv can be a role model no matter what they do outside their role on tv, as long as we as parents keep it seperate and don't say "hey look Miley Cyrus is running around with her side boob hanging out."
YKWIM? Children only know as much as they are told.
