Personal Opinions On Class B Medication

I have really, really high cholesterol, I have changed my diet significantly and have been treated with medication for the last 9 months. My cholesterol has come down but the doctors said due to my family history, the odds of it being perfect ever, are not in my favor without meds. With that being said, the cholesterol medication is Pregnancy Class B. (it has been tested on animals with no harm but there is no controlled data for the human) My Doctor of course gave me his opinion but I have the ultimate decision. I know what the FDA says I understand that. What I'm looking for is your opinion.

Its a fat soluble drug and therefore not excreted in breast milk so I could go back on it right after I have the baby, but do I stay on it since I have been on it for 9 months now? Or should I stop taking it until post partum? Whats your personal opinion?? What would you do?

Re: Personal Opinions On Class B Medication

  • I would keep taking it. It's class B and part of having a healthy baby is having a healthy momma. There is hardly ever research done on the side effects on humans during pregnancy because what women would put their unborn child in that kind of risk to be in the control group? I know I wouldn't.

I wouldn't take it and look for natural methods to lower and maybe see a DO.

  • I would keep taking it. You have to stay healthy to have a healthy baby and it is not a dangerous drug. I am pretty sure 99% of drugs are class B because no one does clinical trials on pregnant women.

If the risk of being off this pill outweighs any potential damage to the fetus (it sounds like there is little risk of damage), then I would take the pills with my doctor's guidance. Maybe you can have a lower dose if you're worried? I don't know much about cholesterol issues so I don't know the potential harm to you.

    This!

Absolutely. You will be hard pressed to find ANY class A pregnancy drugs because it is fairly unethical and difficult to do any clinical trials o. Pregnant women. There are no know harms to pregnant women.
    Waiting for #3!

  • I think I would keep taking it. I don't know much about cholesterol (other than that high is bad. What is the risk to you if you stop taking it for 9 months? You need to be healthy too and most drugs are class B. I would take tylenol for a headache, so this isn't much different as far as I know.

  • My opinion is that class B meds are fine.  Just relax and enjoy your pregnancy! your baby will be fine.

I had to take class c meds with my last pregnancy and even class c isn't that bad.. it just means there haven't been studies.  I had a lot of kidney problems and had to have surgery right after my son was born.  Most b & c class meds are fine, the only major contraindications are cancer meds and lithium as far as I know.
