If your LO uses a pacifier at night and they wake up during the night fussing/crying do you go in and give it to him/her? Our LO has been waking up 1-3 times a night lately because he has lost his pacifier and can't find it. Last night he cried for about 20 min before H went in and gave it to him. I want to stop going in and giving it to him but wonder if that is 'fair' since he has it when he falls asleep in his crib at bedtime. What are your thoughts?
Re: pacifier and night wake-ups
I used to keep about 5 pacis in there, now there are only two. I stopped giving it to him when I put him in the crib - he has to find it on his own now. When I check him before I go to bed, I make sure that he is either holding them or they are within arm's reach.
I never go in at night unless he really starts crying - that's only been maybe three times since he moved to his own room when we moved into this house in May. I stopped getting up to give him the paci a long time ago, so maybe it made a difference that we did it earlier. I honestly have no idea if he goes back to sleep without the paci if he wakes up and can't find it - he usually wakes up before me and always has it in his mouth when I come get him.
I'm pretty sure that Ferber talks about how to deal with this in his book, but I haven't read it for awhile.
I put 4 in his crib last night and gave it a try. He didn't find any of them when he woke up at 4 am, but I don't think he knows to look for them. Regardless he fussed for a few minutes and fell back asleep. I will continue to put a bunch in his crib each night and hopefully he'll start finding them when he needs them. Thanks for the advice
