Cloth Diapering

Talking CD with my mom(Very Interesting)

My mom cloth diapered all four of her children in the 80's, and yes everyone at the time though she was a crazy hippy, because everyone was using plastic! What was really interesting was when I was asking her how she did it she pretty much did none of the things we talk about today.

She used prefolds, pins, and wool covers

-She did not know you prepped since she got all of hers used.

-she washed in tide original, and had hard water

-she did nothing special for the wool covers

-she did not know what stripping was, and she never did it

- none of us ever had diaper rash, she said that right when we got wet she would change us since there were no plastic covers

This seems pretty nice to me, and I was pretty surprised!

  • I wash in Tide original and have VERY hard water. Works fine here.

  • That's awesome! It does seem like we maybe complicate things too much. I've yet to find a detergent I'm 100 percent happy with and we have very hard water. I am seriously considering switching to Tide.

  • My Mom gave me some leftover prefolds from my sis and I.  They were Gerber's and quickly fell apart but I used them anyway.  LOL!

  • This is our 3rd baby that we CD and I can say I have NEVER stripped a diaper (we've always CD from birth- none of my kids ever wore a disposable).  However, we use prefolds and Motherease Sandy diapers which are 100% cotton.  Using 100% cotton really cuts down the need for striping or detergent sensitivity.  I have used Tide but mostly use Country Save since its cheaper (I also have hard water).  I did prep my diapers but I bought them all new.  And none of my kids ever had diaper rash and were fully PT (daytime, naps and bedtime) at 15 & 17 months old- it was super easy and took less than 3 days.  I truly think the choices you make in your diaper selection really change the experience you have.
  • My mom said the same thing. She used prefolds, would put them in a pail with water and a little Tide. Washed them normally and rinsed them extra. Used plastic diaper covers. Never had any issues. Still has the prefolds today but uses them to dust!

  • I just got my first batch of prefolds today, im thinking this is the easiest way to do it. I bought two kushies covers from babiesrus, using a snappi...

I recently bought 23 fuzzibunz used, and having a tough time with leaks, amonia

and not knowing if they r clean or not? repelling?stripping? ugg so annoying.

hoping these prefolds work-cuz they seem much easier to maintain.

Strip your Fuzzibunz with RLR!  A quick google search should give you instructions. Check the detergent you are using to make sure it is cd-safe, and make sure you aren't using any zinc or petroleum based rash creams!

  • Yup, PFs are pretty easy and simple to maintain.  There isn't much you can do to hurt them.

Things are more "complicated" now because the diapers have gotten more advanced.

  • My MIL CDed all 5 of her kids and gave me some of her old prefolds. They were pretty thin and beat up, I just use them as dust rags.

  • My mom CD'ed three of us as babies. She used prefolds and fitteds with the plastic (horrible) pants. She never stripped her diapers because she used a little bit of bleach with every load that she did. We never used fleece liners, and she just doubled up on prefolds at nighttime.
