SO taking maternity leave?

As a FTM im not sure what to expect from DH as far as him staying home for awhile after LO arrives.  I think we are planning on having DH off while im in the hospital then the first day home then after that returning to work. How long are your SO's staying home from work?

Re: SO taking maternity leave?

  • My husband is going to take 2 weeks off  Big Smile Well that is the plan at least lol

  • The same with me. His company doesn't offer "paternity leave" it would have to go through the state. He is lucky enough to work from home, so he will probably go back to the office a few days after LO arrives and then sporadically until I go back as well....
  • My DH and I agreed he would take 11 weeks off but we both work and I am taking 12 weeks off before going back. This is also our first baby so we wanted to spend as much time together as possible before we have to go back.
  • DH is taking two weeks, possibly three.

  • My DH is going to stay home with me using FMLA for the first week or two (depending on what the doctor says).

Then, after I'm done with my family leave, he will take family leave and stay home with the baby for 6 weeks.

    Then we'll start day care.

  • He will, but not sure how much yet.  His company gives him 5 weeks of paid paternity leave (in addition to his PTO), but he won't take that much.  At his level, it just isn't realistic.  He will probably take 2 weeks completely off and then work from home for 2 more.

  • DH gets 4 weeks, which he can take in 1 chunk, or spread out. not sure which approach we'll take, depends how busy things are at the office.

  • I honestly don't know!! My husband just started a new job last week, and even if his new employer were large enough to be covered by FMLA, he won't be there long enough to take advantage of it anyway. But the nice thing is that his job is super, super flexible. He's able to work from home several days a week, so at the moment I believe his plan is to go into the office extra days in the months leading up to the baby's birth, so he can work from home more than usual for awhile. He'll still have to spend time in his office doing work during the day of course, but he'll be able to take lunch breaks with us, and won't have to deal with a super long commute on those days, so we'll get plenty of good quality time together. :-)

  • Ours will depend on when my c-section is scheduled for.  Right now I am hoping for a Thursday or Wednesday afternoon.  This way my SO will take off the two days (day babies are born then the next day) with me in the hospital then if a weekend be able to stay with me until release (4 days).  If after that it's work days, she will return to work and my sister will keep my company in the hospital.

Once we are home from the hospital, she will try and take a week off but she will have to go in on Wednesday that week for sure to do payroll.   Her week off will be unpaid so we might spread it out over two weeks with three days the first week and two days the next (or some half days).

Either way my mom is planning on taking up to two weeks off work to come and help as my SO will not get much time off once the babies come home.

My SO is hoping to start seriously job hunting for a new job in January so if it times right she will be able to take a couple of weeks before starting with a new company to stay home with us.   That's my hope anyways.  She is actually really upset she won't get much time home with us so we shall see what she ends up doing.

  • H wants to the same with L that he did with Z. He took two weeks off when the baby was born. One was vacation and the other Paternity leave. He had 5 months of paternity leave left and took one week off a month until he was out, so until July. I will be out to June, so he will have one on one time with L for a week in July.

  • while his work gives awesome PTO for mothers and adoptive parents of both sexes, the time given for fathers is fairly shameful...only one week. but he is also planning to use his leftover vacation rolled over from this year as well which is at least another week.

i am self-employed and already finished my last big job of the year a couple weeks ago (although i have a bit of work left to do on them in-house until they are REALLY finished) and i have none on the books again until early may.

  • My DH doesn't get any paid paternity leave either. He's been saving up his vacation days and plans to take about 2 weeks off.

  • DH gets no paid paternity leave, so any time off will be vacation days or unpaid. By the time the baby is born, he should have 4.5 vacation days accrued and will use all of them the first week.

  • If my hubs is working, he'll take a day, maybe two, off after the baby is born if it's a weekday.  If I have a c-section, he'll take that week (4 day stay for me).  If he is not working, he'll be home until he starts working again.

  • He took off 2 weeks.  They have this built in for each of the men in the company.  It's really nice.  After that, he had saved up enough time to take off a day/or 2 a week off for about a month.  Also really nice :)

  • My husband was present for DD's birth and then I sent him back to work.  I did not want him wasting his time off hanging around a hospital when I had plenty of nurses, doctors and visitors to help me.  I asked him to wait and take his "real" time off once I got home, because that was when I needed the most help.  And he didn't really take much time off.  More like a day here and there, and a 1/2 day here and there.

This time around it'll be the same.  He'll be there for the birth but otherwise he can go to work.

  • DH has leave plus vacation.  He will take 1 week off at first.  Then his parents, my mom and siblings will rotate.  Once no one is left he will take his remaining time if I need him.

  • DH should get 10 days (including weekends though). Since he's military they say what goes so unfortunately I can't count on him getting any time off besides the time I'm in the hospital. For DS we were lucky and got the 10 days plus 4 extra due to the Marine Corps Ball being right at the end of our 10 days.

  • He's planning on taking two weeks off. Neither one of us gets maternity leave, so it's all vacation time.

  • I'm jealous of anyone who gets paid paternity leave, or paid maternity leave.  For both of us, we need to use our vacation and sick time for the birth of a baby.

I'm having a planned c-section, so our official birth date is scheduled for Friday, February 1st.  He will take that day off.  I'll be in the hospital through the weekend, and will probably come home on Monday.  He'll be off Monday and Tuesday (most likely) and then will go to work for the rest of the week.  He is able to work from home up to four times a month without any questions asked, so I'm sure he'll work from home once a week until I go back to work in April (I'll be off about 8 weeks).

Both my parents and my in-laws live close, so if I need help, someone will be there.

  • SO and I work for the same school district, so we only qualify for FMLA once. We don't get paid for FMLA but can use our accrued leave to keep getting paid, so I have enough days to cover 6 weeks and then he will take the remaining 6 weeks. He will most likely also take a couple days when baby first arrives as regular leave, and not FMLA. I would love to take more, but the I can't afford to, I know DH is really excited to get to spend time with LO as well and takes pride in his duties as a FTD. We are lucky though, because 12 weeks takes us to summer break so both DH and I will be off for the three months of summer break. So I will be returning to work for only 6 weeks and then I get to take more time off with my new little family.

  • In CA men can get Paternity Leave. My DH is substitute, so he can just refuse calls when needed, so we're not taking advantage of living in CA.
  • DH has told his boss that as of my due date he is on call for me and will be taking a week off of work when the baby is born. During that week off, DH might have to call in or go to the office (he manages a company), but the office is a 10 min drive from our place.

My husband will be taking two weeks off right when baby and I come home, and then one month off with baby when I return to work after my 12-week maternity leave. So, six weeks total, but split up.

  • My husband can take up to six weeks of accrued sick leave after the baby is born, but it has to be taken within 6 weeks of delivery.  He will probably take 2-3 weeks off (I think he and I will both go crazy if he is home longer than that...).  He may then take another 2 weeks of accrued vacation time when I go back to work, but it will depend on whether we have daycare yet.
  • My husband doesn't get paternity leave. He plans on using a week or two of vacation. Also he's in sales so he can kind of make his own hours which is nice.

My mom lives five minutes down the road and doesn't work. I imagine I'll be seeing her quite a bit Wink

  • For us we have split our time. Since w eboth work for the same commany.  So we get to share 16 weeks.  So we decided that  I will take 12 weeks and he would take 4 weeks.  If we were not married and we both still work for the same company than we would each be able to get 16 weeks.
