Carseat Thoughts

We keep going back and forth on whether to buy a bucket seat or just go straight to a convertible for the second baby.  We had a bucket seat the first time around, but it was given to us by a friend and has since expired.  I think I have finally decided on a convertible, but would appreciate any thoughts you might want to share.

Here is my line of thinking.....Any time I am alone with both kiddos, there is NO way I am going to be able to manage Max while lugging an infant seat.  I am barely quick enough as it is.  I wore Max a lot as an infant and think that I would have the most range of movement while wearing this baby too.

Max only lasted in his infant seat for about 6 months due to extreme car freakouts.  Granted, I have no idea what baby #2 will do, but I would hate to spend the money and have the same thing happen.

The two double strollers we are looking at both recline enough to allow for a younger infant if we needed to use the stroller right away.

I know that there is a convenience factor to a bucket seat and I know that I am giving up the ability to carry a sleeping baby into the house.  We don't go out to eat much as it is, so I'm not factoring in the convenience of a bucket seat in that situation either.

Am I leaving anything out?  Am I crazy to think that it won't be too terribly inconvenient with just a convertible?  Did anyone go this route first time around?  TIA!

Re: Carseat Thoughts

  • If you do a lot of babywearing then you could get away with not having a bucket seat, especially if you don't eat out a lot.  Your second kid probably won't be as bad in the car.  At least here's hoping!!

  • I am getting this next time--actually I still want it now even though I know it will not work for what I want it too.

I like the fact that it should make it to a couple of years and still able to be a take along seat as needed should LO fall asleep seems awesome. My LO wakes once the cars door opens though so it wouldn't work for us.

  • Personally, I love the convenience of the bucket seat - Like being able to put the baby down anywhere - so I would definitely not go straight to the convertible.

  • I hated the bucket, and would be going straight to a convertible seat IF we didn't already have a bucket that we bought new for C.  Actually, if I find it to be inconvenient at all, or find that I'm pulling the baby in and out of it like I did all the time with C anyway, then I'll just get a convertible for him.  But I figure we'll use what we have for now.  I always said that for all future kiddos, I would put them in a convertible once they hit 10 lb.  C hated the bucket seat and our lives all got so much better once he switched (at 4 months).

  • Having 2 under 2 a bucket seat was a must. My first was in seat for 12 months and my second 11 months. We are a very on the go family.

  • I don't think it's crazy at all. DD was REALLY bad in the car for the first six months, and I think it may have been that she hated the bucket seat.  For baby #2, we'll try the bucket since we have it, but will be much more likely to go to a convertible earlier if there is a lot of screaming like there was with DD.

DD wasn't really a napper in the car, and when she did, she usually woke up before we got her into the house.  For me, the main convenience was that my bucket snapped on to my stroller.  Since that stroller won't work with two kids, it's a moot point, when we look at options for #2.

I say go for it, especially since you like baby wearing.  It sounds like a logical idea to me.
