Tongue Tie

Today we met with a LC after noticing DS has a "click" when he nurses, as well as giving up after only a few minutes at the breast and other things. She determined that he was having difficulty keeping his latch (and drinking from a bottle) due to having a tongue tie and a more arched roof of his mouth.  We tried numerous positions and whatnot, and ultimately, are being sent for a consult with an Ear, Nose, and Throat pediatrician.  They will then decide if a frenotomy (clip) is needed.  Does anyone have experience with this and what did you decide to do?  I'm leaning more towards clipping, just because I've found articles with the LLL and Unicef that list all the benefits of clipping, but DH is a little hesitant about the procedure.

Re: Tongue Tie

  • I, personally was tongue tied. Around 6th grade I had the clip done. I couldn't stick my tongue out all the way and said my "s" a little funny. It was a simple outpatient procedure and I'm so happy it was done.

  • My older son had his clipped at about 1 month. Very simple procedure when they are young. Just a clip and very little blood...I nursed him and done.

  • DS was clipped at 1 day old. So glad that we did it, as I noticed a difference right away.

  • My tongue has been like that my entire life, I've never had any issues. My son now has it, and he doesn't have any issues but I think I'm going to talk to our doc about the procedure at his next appt.

  • DS has his clipped at 2 weeks old. It helped his latch/my nipples tremendously.

  • DS's pedi clipped his at his 1 wk appt.  His tongue is still really tight but that's all she could clip in the office.  He has never stuck his tongue out so we may have to go to an ENT when he's older if it causes speech problems. Can I ask why the pedi is referring you to an ENT?  I think it's a simple office procedure.  It took a few seconds, he had a drop of blood and then all was good.

The hospital that he is seen through needs to do a further evaluation to determine if they are wanting to do it there or not.  The pediatrician we are seeing now isn't his pediatrician, as they do "well baby" visits for the first 2 weeks and then we are transferred to his clinic (military treatment facility procedure).

  • DS and I are actually going to the ENT in a few hours. I had asked multiple doctors nurses and LCs if he was tongue tied and I am pretty sure they missed a posterior tongue tie. We will find out soon.

I have zero issue with the procedure. It is so quick, and it can prevent a to of BFing pain for you, future speech issues for your LO, and growth issues for your LO. We are going in because my DS can't pull milk effectively from me; he only JUST hit his birth weight and he's almost 6 weeks old!

Talk with the ENT about it, but I think there is much more good in the procedure than bad.

  • My sister was tongue tied and got clipped. According to my mom it made a huge difference nursing. She always asks about the grandbabies latching to make sure.

  • We had DS tongue tie done within 24 hrs after he was born... he actually has a heart shaped tongue and while that won't go away, it made a huge difference in nursing. We saw 3 pedi's then an ENT and they did it while we were still inpatient. It took all of 5 minutes. Totally worth it.

A heart shape tongue IS a sign of tongue tie, my DD has this and is severely tongue tied. Pretty sure it's because of the frenulum pulling back or restricting the tongue when you try to extend it. You may want to have the tongue rechecked, it's very common for ties to reattach especially if no stretches were done following the procedure.
