Pediatricians in Jacksonville.

Hello all,

Today hubs and I had a little preterm labor scare, all is well, but I did realize that I am no where near as ready for this baby as I thought. The one thing the nurse told me to do was research and find a peditrician. I have no idea where to start, anyone have info on peds that accept tricare in the area. Thanks!

** I am looking to stay off base since my medical care there has been less than stellar. I feel pretty bad saying that, considering my husband is a corpseman :(

    If you're on Prime and close to the base that's where you have to be seen. We live 40 min. Away...Saint Augustine....and even though I'm on Prime since I am far away the baby and I can choose a doctor locally. Only problem is I only had 3 choices of Pediatricians for my son. If you want to switch to Standard I do believe the network is bigger but you have more out of pocket costs? Don't quote me on that though I have never been on Standard. I would call Tricare South and they can tell you your options.

    We took DS to Martin Pediatrics and Counseling on Dewitt. It's near Hakata. We loved it there.

    Switch to Standard. It takes care of that pesky military care. I hAd crappy care by military providers, including at J-ville. I switched to Standard and never looked back.

    I hate when people give this advice.  It is only correct if the base hospital has availability.  I had our DS 9 days ago.  We got him in DEERS and Tricare last week, and he's on Prime, and will be seen out in town because the base doesn't have availability.  Just like I'm Prime, my PCM is out in town, but I was seen on base for my OB appointments.

    OP, DS will be seen by Dr. Martin.  We haven't seen him yet, but will be soon.  I agree call Tricare and see who is available that accept Tricare.  Are you Prime or Standard?

    I am in Jacksonville, NC....so what state are you in?  I have one to avoid and one that's great if you're in NC.

    I am Prime, I have the same situation as you with my PCM and my OB, I was referred out for both due to availbility. So once you get the baby enrolled in DEERS, tricare refers you to a Ped? Much like getting a PCM? Thanks for the info.

    Sorry for the late response.  I just types a huge paragraph and deleted it by accident with one keystroke.  Its been crazy today so I'll get back on later and share my experience with you.  In short, avoid Onslow Pediatrics!

    We put DD on Prime when we moved here (reluctantly).  I was told that we would have to be seen out in town and they referred us to Onslow Pediatrics.  I took DD there for her 6 month checkup.  I waited 2 hours in the waiting room to be seen until they called me up and said I would need to reschedule.  The women behind the counter yell to get people's attention in the waiting room and there were no less than 30 people there at the same time as me.  I have never seen that many people in a doctor's office at once waiting to be seen.  

    I thought maybe it was just a fluke but the girl next to me said it was always like this.  She also said when she filled out her questions to be scored by the nurses on her daughter, she called back to find out her score and the nurses said they forgot.  They never scored it.  I got the packet for my questions for the 6 month checkup  and no one ever went over it with me, asked any questions about my daughters development....nothing.  They looked her over, checked her diaper, weighed her and that was about it.  They charged over $400 for that.  The doctor was friendly and they had a sick side and a well side in the waiting area but that's about the only good thing I can say about it.  Aside from that, the place was absolutely filthy.  I was afraid to touch anything.....  Overall, it felt like an in and out type thing just so they could make money.

    Oh and my daughter sees Dr. Earhart.  I've heard really good things about him.  When we went to her 9 month appt. I expressed concern about her being too small and not gaining weight properly.  He immediately diagnosed her with failure to thrive and referred me to a specialist.  It was the reason I had to stop BFing her and put her on formula.  When I mentioned the weight issue at her 6 month appt. the doctor told me he didn't have her "numbers' to plot her previous weights and not to worry about it.  But he did have the numbers....because Dr. Earhart used those same numbers to recognize something was wrong.  I was fuming since in the end, she fell past so many percentiles on the chart to the point that they were required to notify CPS.  I went for 3 months thinking maybe I was just being paranoid about her weight but as it turns out I could have done something about it sooner.  Talk about upset!

    I got my info straight from tricare tyvm. I called when I first got here and THEY told me since I was outside the radius that I could been seen out in town NOT because of an availability reason so if you don't like what I said then blame tricare.

    I was just saying that what you said wasn't always the case, tyvm. I have seen what you posted multiple times on here by other people and I wanted to clarify that. It's misinformation even if you got it from Tricare. If your outside the radius that's a different story, but I know many people who are within radius' who are seen out in town because the base is too full.
