Sippy cup dilemma

We introduced the sippy cup to DS a long time ago with water at meal time and he drinks from them very well.  We decided to start the bottle weaning process as DS will be 1 year in just over a month.  I tried putting formula in a sippy cup to give to DS and he won't have anything to do with it.  The second he realizes it's formula he throws a fit and shoves it away.  I know he can drink from the cup, but  if it's formula he won't even bother.  How can I get him to start trying it without winding up with a frustrated baby?

Re: Sippy cup dilemma

  • You could try an open cup closely supervised. My kid will drink water out of a sippy but not milk and he doesn't take a bottle since he's been EBF. I got a new sippy made by Avent that mimicks an open cup and we're having success with it.

  • You could also try a straw cup. We didn't have much luck with the spill proof ones, but my dd drinks well out of a regular straw so we use one in the smaller tervis cup, not completely spill proof but not too bad either.
  • Will be following this post our LO won't have anything to do with any sippy cups. We've tried 3 different kinds and for a day or two he seems interested then they just become toys. But he will drink from a regular cup. So I suppose we'll just keep trying....

  • We're in the same situation as OP.We have different sippy-s.Playtex, Born free, Avent you name it. My DD drinks water from them just fine, but not the formula.

    Looking forward to hearing ideas.

  • We have actually tried the straw sippy cup as well.  Just as other cups, he drinks well from all of them when it is water, but when you put formula in it he won't have anything to do with it.  The type of cup doesn't seem to be the issue.  I think he just associates water with it.  I did try putting formula in the sippy yesterday, but I watered it down.  That seemed to work initially, but it hasn't worked much today.  I'm going to keep trying and see what happens, but I'm a little concerned that if he won't take formula in the cup that he won't take milk from it when that's introduced.  We haven't tried open cups yet, if things continue to be frustrating this week, maybe we will give that a try.
