Weight difference at 29 weeks

I'm 29 weeks with b/g twins...at my growth sono Friday my boy was 3lbs 7oz above the 90th percentile and my girl was 2lbs 11oz. They are concerned about him being too big and now they have me going in for weekly NSTs to keep an eye on things...I'm just worried...anyone ever been through this and what was the outcome? Thanks :

Re: Weight difference at 29 weeks

  • Hi - yes I posted a couple weeks back about this very thing. I was hospitalized for a night at my local hospital after a routine ultrasound showed a large weight discrepancy and also absent/diminished diastolic flow on baby girl's umbilical cord artery. I was given steroid shots just in case, and our second ultrasound showed better (but not great) results.

I immediately transferred to a high-risk MFM and now go for twice weekly BPP's and once weekly NST's. Your girl is a pound more than mine (I find out current weights tomorrow) so at almost 3 pounds I am jealous! But anyway, it's hard not to worry so I'm not going to say that at all. I've been a nervous wreck for the past couple weeks but it's getting easier since I'm getting monitored so much. Personally, I would ask for a cord doppler flow (ultrasound) on your baby girl. My MFM explained that he believes it just is poor implantation of the cord on baby girl as opposed to baby boy. however it's something they are closely watching and if you're not seeing a high risk doctor, I probably would. Not that I'm saying we defintiely have the same problem, but it could be an issue of her not getting the same nutrients that he has access to through the cord.

Chances are everything will be fine, but i know i feel 200 times better seeing a specialist as opposed to my regular RE. Good luck! Feel free to PM me if you want...

  • I had di/di boy twins. My guys had some weight discordancy and I did go for a doppler flow study on the cords. Fortunately, it turned out that the u/s weights were simply consistently wrong and the weight difference was not as severe as suspected.

I also recommend asking for a doppler study to verify the cord flows. But hopefully, there is nothing wrong, just the way your babies are developing.

  • Thanks guys...I am going to request to have that done. 3 weeks ago he was in the 73rd percentile and she was in the 43rd...so he is definitely growing a lot faster than her. Is this something that they would have to deliver me early for if he got too big or she didnt catch up? im going to talk to my dr about it tuesday when i see her...its all so scary! Thanks again for the help :

  • just wanted to let you know I am exactly the same boat.  I was 29 weeks yesterday w/ b/g twins.  At my appt today, Baby A (boy) was 3lbs 6oz and Baby B (girl) was 2lbs 12oz.  I didn't see the dr. today, just the ultrasound tech, but she didn't seem concerned.  I am a weekly patient, so if there is still a difference next week, I am going to ask.

  • I don't necessary think it means definitely delivering early. Mine is a bit of an extreme case...he is in the 52nd percentile and she was only at the 10th percentile. so we have a huge discrepancy on our hands. Then again, my MFM didn't make it seem as if it's the percentile necessarily. I guess it's measuring them along the road and seeing if the discordance grows. If they continue steadily, then it just means he's bigger than her. I am fairly sure it's if she starts to drop off, then they would consider taking them early. But again, try not to panic until you know more. And I guess one thing you can be thankful for is while it's not ideal, they are at ok enough weights where you know they are both viable.

    Best wishes!

  • I am going through this same thing right now.  2 weeks ago at my MFM appt they discovered a 25% growth discordance and I had to start going for weekly BPPs (biophysical profiles).  Basically my doctor said not to be overly worried, but that when there is a size difference of 25%+ they like to increase monitoring to ensure that the smaller baby is doing well in the womb.  So far I have passed both tests I have had and it is actually very reassuring to be watched closer.  Good luck!

  • I had a similar weight difference between my guys, who were born last week at 35 and 3. They were mostly concerned about my little guy and how his cord and placenta were doing. At 33 weeks they started to see diastolic resistance in his cord and at 35 weeks they were seeing diastolic rest (which meant blood flow from the placenta paused occasionally between beats). I was induced the next day. He'd been predicted to be over 4 lbs, he was 3lb 11oz and his brother a full 2 lbs heavier! They're both doing great! Just make sure they monitor you closely, I know how scary it is to need all the extra appointments, but it's really reassuring too, because if there was a reason for your MFM to be really worried, they'd let you know!
