Natural Birth

Natural Birth and Scoliosis

Just curious about other natural birth mom's experiences with scoliosis.

I actually got an IUD on Friday and the procedure came with quite a bit of cramping and feelings comparable to the back labor I had with DS's birth - aka, a lot of pressure but also somewhat focused on one side. It was like an "oh!" moment where I realized scoliosis might affect labor because if my spine is twisted incorrectly, my uterus could be contracting against it and hitting nerves and whatnot.

Any other moms out there with scoliosis? What has your experience been like?

Re: Natural Birth and Scoliosis

  • No personal experience with scoliosis, but from what I've read of the Webster technique and chiropractic care during pregnancy, it could very much effect baby's positioning and in that way impact labor.

The Webster Technique aims to correct any misalignment in the lower back, pelvis, and sacrum so that baby can be in the optimal position for labor. If your bones are not in the correct alignment, it can pull your uterus into an odd shape and make baby sit poorly or keep contractions from occurring in the front where they should. Optimal positioning can decrease time spent in labor and the pain in labor (especially by preventing back labor). Not sure if chiropractic care would help with a premanent condition like scoliosis, but it might be worth a shot.

I have it, and it didn't affect my labor at all.
I have it, its corrected with rods though.  Even then it didn't affect my labor at all.  I was induced with my first baby but no one said I would need to have a c/s or anything.

  • My mom has terrible scoliosis and she had two natural births with no complications. As far as I know, she didn't have back labor either. She describes her births as "uncomfortable but painless" so I'm guessing the scoliosis didn't affect it too much.
  • I had back labor with both boys, but both were OP, so that is to be expected.
  • Thank you for sharing your experiences! I am thinking I will perhaps try seeing a chiropractor next pregnancy.
