S/O holiday gifts... does your work give you anything?

Just thinking about the post asking what people were going to do for their daycare providers for Christmas. I know our DCPs take care of our children all day while we can't be there, and their jobs are hard, but I'm just wondering do any of you get gifts around the holidays? From your employer or from clients? I am a social worker and I feel like it is the most under-respected profession on earth. My involvement with families at the hospital where I work isn't always positive in their eyes, and so I pretty much never get any thanks or appreciation. My hospital also doesn't do anything for us at the holidays - no gift or bonus, no party. I don't even get time off except for Christmas day. MH on the other hand gets a hefty bonus check every year and a really nice Christmas party from his work.

So, I was just wondering. What is your work like?

  • My cousin is a social worker in a hospital too so I have heard how hard of a job it is. That stinks that they don't even do anything for you all. Gosh, even a free lunch in the cafeteria would probably be something they could do as a minimum.

We never get anything here from the Profs who are in charge of the lab. Heck, they don't even bring cookies and coffee to their student's defenses and the student has to run around doing that while trying to get prepped. I never buy them anything either though so we are all even here.

  • I'm a SAHM but H gets a $20 gift certificate to the meat dept of a local grocery store. My grandma is an RN and this year received a paper certificate for a free turkey and ham. ( I know this only because she gave it to me to use so I can cook them and just give her some ;) )

At Christmas time H gets a $20 or $25 gift card to Walmart. It's nothing spectacular but it's better than nothing.

  • The company shuts down for the holidays.  We all get paid holiday between Christmas and New Year.  Our department usually gets each employee a pair of movie tickets.  I'm fine with this, I'm just happy I don't have to use my sick or vacation time during the holidays.  The next holiday we get off is in May for Memorial Day.
  • I am a high school teacher so I don't get anything.  Occasionally one of my students will bake something for me, which is always nice!

We usually do a work party but we have to pay for it ourselves - in recent years we've taken to just going out for drinks recently in lieu of an "official" holiday party.

  • MH's old job took the team out to lunch and gave away gift cards and lottery tickets. His new job gave everyone a $15 gift certificate for a grocery store, and their holiday party is coming up where they give out bonuses, so we'll see if he gets anything since he's only been there about 5 months. My work does not give anything at a corporate level. At a local level, we do small gift exchanges amongst each other ... kinda unofficially. I bring everyone homemade treats, and some of the guys get me gift cards/small gifts. This year, I'll do that again and get my admin a small gift since I'm actually over someone now. We usually have a pitch-in lunch, too, but no one's mentioned it this year. I may just make a meal using my crock pots and bring it in when my EVP is in town next month. The one year we tried to decorate the office, our receptionist threw a fit and took it all down because she's Jehovah's Witness (sp?) and doesn't celebrate, so everyone gave up on that. I'm currently trying to think of something nice & creative to deliver to my regular clients next month.

  • We close down for the holiday and don't go back until January, we get 2 paid for dinners at our Christmas parties, they have a pancake's with Santa for the kids, this is free and each kid gets a 100 dollar present, plus we get a 300 dollar gift card. So I get a lot of perks, I plan on get my DCP something, but nothing crazy

  • We are forced to take 2 weeks off over Christmas. They take away Columbus Day and another random holiday, our floating holiday and make us use leave for the other two days. We have no choice. I'm new and have no leave yet so it is two days of leave without pay. No bonuses, no cost of living increase. I work for a grant funded program for a big city in city government. DH gets no time off unless he requests it, no bonus, no gifts. He works for the federal government. Womp womp.

  • I usually get gifts from the Court Reporting companies - mugs, bottles of wine, notepads - nothing fancy.  I haven't worked for this boss yet during the holidays, so I have no idea if he's going to get me anything.  Most firms give bonuses, but I don't think that's going to happen here.

  • The company I work for does nothing for the employees and even though they promote themselves as a family focused company they have taken away holidays that we had been closed for and are increasing the hours for the holidays that we were open with. Within the pharmacy we do a secret Santa gift exchange and we get together for lunch to do the exchange. The pharmacists split the cost for the lunch.
I can't remember if DH's company does anything for them but he usually gets the people in his department a card and a scratch off. It's not much but we can't afford to shell out a lot of extra money during the holidays. He also gets his direct reports something extra.
  • Two years ago, SO's boss gave people that worked there 10 years a cruise. SO was three months shy of his 10 year mark.

Last year was his 10 year mark, and he got nothing. They didn't give anyone any gifts. And the company, financially, did way better than years previous.

We aren't holding our breath this year.

  • As a Federal employee I get nothing except Christmas day off.

DH works for IKEA and last year they got an e-reader and the year before a mountain bike, but no bonuses or anything.

  • No. We don't get anything from work other than that they bring bagels in for everyone on the last day before Christmas. That said, I am grateful that they give me both Christmas Eve day and Christmas off.

  • I work with a bunch of Detectives and Prosecutors and most make $120k+.....there are about 10 of them in my unit alone.  Last year, I got a $25 gift card.  Really?  Combined, they make over $1million and that is what I get?  Thanks.

WTF!  Prosecutors in my area make half of that.  I know this for a fact.

I usually send in something for DH's department support staff - homemade hot chocolate packets in mugs, truffles, cookies,  apple spice mulling packets in mugs, etc.

  • Yes, we have a holiday party, get a small gift and a gift card. Between co-workers we exchange gifts and we do a cookie exchange. Mh's boss gives gifts, we got an entertainment book last year and he takes everyone out to lunch.

If they are the head of a department, they make $120k+....nowadays they are starting in the low $40's though....But, for those that have been here for 10+ years, they are doing JUST fine.....
