Natural Birth

placenta

Does anyone have plans for their placenta after the birth? I have lots of mama friends who have planted theirs under a favorite tree or dehydrated it and made them into pills. One friend blended hers up into a smoothie (no joke!!) and another actually ate it like steak.

I know they say all kinds of things about the placenta warding off postpartum depression and helping with milk supply.... but I'm still weighing my options. Or if I'm going to bother with it at all.

any other mamas have plans for this yet?

Re: placenta

  • I was surprised when my midwives left it behind in the freezer. I had no idea what to do with it. We mostly steered clear of it until we cleaned out the freezer one day and decided we had to do something. We talked about burying it but I was afraid it would attract animals. I had no interest in eating it. Finally we decided just to throw it away, although I felt a little weird doing so and still do. I wish there was something more to do with it but I still have no idea what. I probably should have just buried it.

  • I did encapsulation. I'm so glad I did. It really did help with my milk supply and baby blues.

  • We planted a peach tree with ours.  Seeing the tree bloom and bear fruit this year made me think of the wonderful day our son was born.

  • We planted both our placentas. I'm in NZ, and here it's culturally common to bury the placenta as a symbol of tying your child to the land where they are from.

  • I'm encapsulating mine this time!  I had baby blues with DD, so I hoping it will help with that!

  • I had my placenta encapsulated and took it in the pill form.  It was great and I have never had issues with PPD or with my milk supply.  I think it helped my mood and I defiantly could notice a difference on days when I did not take the pills.  I could never eat it raw or drink it in a smoothie, but I have heard those are good uses for it as well.
  • I think I replied to this on another board, but I am encapsulating mine. I had supply issues and the baby blues with my son. It is supposed to help with both those problems. I figure why not give it a shot!
  • My son's is still in the deep freeze until we plant another tree, then we'll bury it.

  • I plan on encapsulating my placenta this time. I really regret not doing it last time.

  • I've thought about encapsulation but I think I am just going to eat it. I would like it to last through three days or maybe a week so I may do the smoothie but freeze at least most of it so it doesn't loose freshness.

From what I have read, placenta seems to absorb well with whatever flavors you mix it with. But you also have to cut off the membranes and umbilical cord to get rid of the tough parts.

  • i ate my placenta in a smoothie over the course of about 3 weeks. best thing ever. and i'm a sorta vegetarian.

placenta ingestion is actually no joke! it is highly beneficial for postpartum mothers and benefits include: reduced incidence of PPD, earlier and more robust milk production, fewer hormonal imbalances, reduced incidence of postpartum hemorrhages, fewer days of lochia, and much more.

  • A doula is encapsulating mine and making a portion of it into a lotion I can use on my LO.
  • I too am encapsulating mine this time in hopes of boasting my milk supply. Glad to hear some of the other mommas who had good experiences with it.

  • Thanks for all the responses. It is interesting to see the difference between response here and the ones from the 2nd trimester board. :-)

I have looked into it a bit more and think I will at least make it into capsules. The cost isn't that high and it won't leave me regretting that I didn't do something with it. I like the idea of a smoothie with it... but I'm not sure if I can handle that as I'm not a huge smoothie fan in the first place (although I've been drinking them during pregnancy to get fresh veggies and fruit into my diet more easily).

  • We did raw (dehydrated) encapsulation. If we have any more kids, I would do the same, but also have some of it turned into a tincture since that can last for decades.

How did you make yours keep over such a long period of time? I want to eat mine raw in a smoothie but I am also "mostly veg" and don't have a lot of experience keeping meat fresh. TIA

  • I had mine in the freezer forever with DD.  On the day before her church dedication we decided to bury it on our land.  I figured her church dedication represented us giving her back to God and the placenta "dedication" was giving thanks to God's creation for providing nutrition to her for so long - sort of giving it back to the earth to grow more food.

Yes, my family thinks I'm crazy. ;)

  • I'm going to have mine encapsulated. I had some pretty bad PPA last time and know that the placenta is known to help curb both PPA and PPD.

  • With my last birth I made smoothies out of my daughter's placenta, as well as a tincture which will most likely literally last me a lifetime. With my upcoming birth I will most definitely consume again, though I think I will make placenta "jerky" of sorts as opposed to smoothies. Actually, I may do both. Raw placenta (smoothies) is much more beneficial then cooked, dehydrated, steamed, etc.
