Does anyone have plans for their placenta after the birth? I have lots of mama friends who have planted theirs under a favorite tree or dehydrated it and made them into pills. One friend blended hers up into a smoothie (no joke!!) and another actually ate it like steak.
I know they say all kinds of things about the placenta warding off postpartum depression and helping with milk supply.... but I'm still weighing my options. Or if I'm going to bother with it at all.
any other mamas have plans for this yet?

I'm encapsulating mine this time! I had baby blues with DD, so I hoping it will help with that!
Breastfeeding and pregnant!
I've thought about encapsulation but I think I am just going to eat it. I would like it to last through three days or maybe a week so I may do the smoothie but freeze at least most of it so it doesn't loose freshness.
From what I have read, placenta seems to absorb well with whatever flavors you mix it with. But you also have to cut off the membranes and umbilical cord to get rid of the tough parts.
i ate my placenta in a smoothie over the course of about 3 weeks. best thing ever. and i'm a sorta vegetarian.
placenta ingestion is actually no joke! it is highly beneficial for postpartum mothers and benefits include: reduced incidence of PPD, earlier and more robust milk production, fewer hormonal imbalances, reduced incidence of postpartum hemorrhages, fewer days of lochia, and much more.
Thanks for all the responses. It is interesting to see the difference between response here and the ones from the 2nd trimester board. :-)
I have looked into it a bit more and think I will at least make it into capsules. The cost isn't that high and it won't leave me regretting that I didn't do something with it. I like the idea of a smoothie with it... but I'm not sure if I can handle that as I'm not a huge smoothie fan in the first place (although I've been drinking them during pregnancy to get fresh veggies and fruit into my diet more easily).
We did raw (dehydrated) encapsulation. If we have any more kids, I would do the same, but also have some of it turned into a tincture since that can last for decades.
More Green For Less Green
How did you make yours keep over such a long period of time? I want to eat mine raw in a smoothie but I am also "mostly veg" and don't have a lot of experience keeping meat fresh. TIA
I had mine in the freezer forever with DD. On the day before her church dedication we decided to bury it on our land. I figured her church dedication represented us giving her back to God and the placenta "dedication" was giving thanks to God's creation for providing nutrition to her for so long - sort of giving it back to the earth to grow more food.
Yes, my family thinks I'm crazy.
