Breastfeeding

Partial Weaning

I go back to teaching on Feb. 1st, my son will be 5 months.  I don't want to have to pump at school.  Has anyone "partially" weaned? I want to nurse when I'm with him.  I have a good frozen supply so my son will still be on only breast milk during the day.  How do I start to program my body to do this?

Re: Partial Weaning

  • Would you consider pumping 1x at work for maybe a week or two?  During your lunch or sometime?  Then wean off from that.  I'd hate to have you start this partial weaning process while you're still with your LO at home.  I liked every second with my LO.

I think the 6mo. growth spurt was the worst  but after that, I felt like LO's intake went down and you would be more successful with maintaining your supply.  I don't pump at work at all and I still nurse my LO at home.  On weekends, I nurse all day.  On weekdays, only afternoon/evening/overnight.

  • I partially weaned at 12 months.  I stopped pumping during the day and nurse when we're home.  I'd be really nervous about doing it before 6 months, since that's when breastfeeding stops being as hormonal and is driven just by supply/demand.
