We had a one year follow up with an audiologist to check for any late onset issues. We sat in a sound booth and they played different levels of sounds through different speakers to see if she would turn her head towards the sound. It was a pretty simple test. They also tried to test the pressure of her ears, but she wouldn't let them stick the sensors in, and the audiologist said that it was common they couldn't perform that part of the test and that it was no big deal.
My DD failed her NB screen upon discharge. We were scheduled for a recheck about 4-6 weeks later which she failed, then another follow up a month after that which she failed, then scheduled for an ABR (auditory brain stem response) which dx her with auditory neuropathy. Here we are 15 months old with a hearing aid in one ear and a cochlear implant in the other. we turn her implant on tomorrow (Yay!) ... the moral of the story is not to put your follow up off. MOST of the refurals from the NICU are fine when the test is repeated. (I was a NICU nurse as well), but early intervention is key if there is a hearing issue.
DD passed her hearing screening in the nicu so we weren't required to do one again, our state however sent a letter recommending one at 3 months so we did that even though it wasn't required. She passed that as well so we don't have to do any more until she is school age, unless she starts showing signs of an issue.
