I went to BRU today to take a look at baby stuff. I was looking at all the different strollers and trying to figure out which one i like the best. I know travel system are convenient however I'm not a huge fan of them. I felt like a lot of the strollers for the system were very heavy and bulky. My sister had two kids before me and I remember how much I hated her travel system. The baby seats were always heavy and bulky to carry around. I'm thinking of getting a lightweight stroller with a separate car seat. I plan on using wraps and baby carriers to move the baby around.
Is anyone else skipping the travel system stroller?

This. That's fine if you don't want a travel system, but you will probably regret not getting a carrier car seat. Even if you don't plan on leaving the baby in it when you are out of the car normally, there will probably be plenty of times where the baby just fell asleep or is still sleeping when you get somewhere, and being able to just grab the carrier out usually allows them to keep sleeping. Taking them out of the carseat to put into a sling or wrap will probably wake them up most of the time.

i ended up getting a travel system the first time around bc it was cheaper than getting the snap and go and chicco seat separately. Although I've never been a fan of the stroller (Chicco Cortina). Its not great for long walks and takes up tons of trunk space.
I agree with pp's who say its nice to be able to leave a baby in the infant seat if they are sleeping. Also, if you just need to run into somewhere for a quick errand it is easier to not have to strap/unstrap. Another thing no one mentioned is its nice to not have the carseat in the car all the time in the hot weather. I liked the infant seat bc it was always inside and nice and cool. with the convertible it's a pain to keep it covered and cool your car off before strapping LO in while out and about.

We haven't decided if we are getting a travel system. We are on kid #3 and I only used my travel system a handful of times with the first two kids... the stroller was really bulky and I didn't go out much until they were a little older, and at that point it was easier to get an umbrella stroller.
I live in the DC area and I'd never be able to get a bulky stroller on the metro... other than that, DH and I need to decide what we'd use it for and how practical it would be. I'm leaning towards a more compact stroller.

This! I loved the infant carrier with the snap N Go stroller. It was amazingly easy.
I honestly don't know a single person who has started with the convertible seat from the beginning and liked it. It is so much nicer to be able to take the sleeping baby out of the car in the infant seat rather than wake him/her up and carry them or put them in a separate stroller.
Also C fit in her infant seat until she was like 11 months old. She outgrew the height not the weight. She could still fit in there weight wise.
Another point is the convertible seats can be kind of a PITA to install and it's a big pain for us when we have to switch it out from one car to the other. With the infant seat you can get a second base off craigslist for super cheap and then have both of those installed in your two cars and move the infant seat back and forth really easily.
Just my 2 cents.
I wouldn't skip the infant carrier. I can't imagine putting a newborn in a convertible carseat. They look so tiny in the carrier the way it is. And it's so convenient to have the carrier when they fall asleep in the car, or you're running into a store.
And you can still use the carrier and leave it in the car if that's why you desire to do when the baby gets bigger.
I skipped the travel system all together. I'm old & most of my friends bought pricey travel systems but ended up hating them.
I got the Safety 1st on Board Air car seat with the with the Safety 1st Clic stroller frame & loved it. It was a very easy set up & go and I will use it again with this baby. I loved the parent tray & oversize basket. The stroller does also work with Graco & Chicco...if you were wondering. It, the Baby Trend & Chicco frames were recs on Consumer Reports.
For our stroller we ended up getting an UppaBaby G-Luxe umbrella stroller and I like it. It sets with one hand. The only thing I don't like is the small basket & lack of a parent tray. It has a recline feature, so it can be used for smaller babies & DS naps in it all the time.
I am struggling now with double strollers, as DS will be 19 months old when this LO arrives. I really don't want a HUGE stroller & I've heard mixed reviews on the City Mini double. I may use my 2 strollers at first & get a double umbrella when LO gets a little bigger. I doubt I'll be going out a lot alone the first few months.
This is the way I'm leaning, too.

With DS we bought the Snap & Go.. SUPER easy, the infant car seat just straps right in. It's also really lightweight... and cheap since it's just a frame!
Once DS outgrew the infant car seat, we traded in the Snap & Go for a Baby Jogger City Mini. It's also lightweight, and wicked easy to fold. It has decent storage underneath, and a really long sunshade. We love it and continue to use it and are considering buying the double for when this next LO arrives.
If I were you I'd pick up the latest edition of Baby Bargains (book), it talks about pretty much every single baby item you will need and rates them all based on what your needs are. Highly recommend especially before registering. Good luck!
