Gate Check Bag for Double Stroller and Car Seat

We are flying out tomorrow to visit my parents in Oklahoma.  And I am trying to decide if I should get a gate check for our double stoller.  As well, I am trying to decide if I should take my son's FAA approved car seat on the plane or if I should get a gate check bag for the car seat.  What have you done when you have flown with your toddler?

Re: Gate Check Bag for Double Stroller and Car Seat

  • I've never used a gate check bag. I just leave it at the bottom of the gate and it's always fine upon arrival. I also bring our seat on the plane for a couple of reasons. First- the one time I didn't it got broken. Second, DD crashes out every single time we get on a plane as long as she is in her seat. NOt sure if it's all the white noise or what, but the poor kid can't stay awake on a flight to save her life.

  • I bough a special bag for his carseat and I gatechecked his umbrella stroller. They lost it AND trashed it so if its a nice stroller I wouldnt.

  • We got a regular travel bag for the seat and then stuffed diapers, the kids blankets and a few other things in there since it is free to check and saved room in the luggage we had to pay for.  We checked the car seat and not gate check.  I wouldn't want to haul the seat through the air port.  We got a really since bag for our double stroller and gate checked.  Every single time they sent it through to baggage claim while the ones that were not in a bag were at the gate.  I would either check the stroller or not bag it and gate check.

  • We don't gate check the dbl or car seat-we check them at the reservation desk. Partly, b/c the dbl is so big, it's difficult to get thru the x-ray machine and we have to go to a special terminal for children that is a far walk. If it's a single or umbrella, we gate check. I have seen the car seat bag before, but have not used it. Our airport provides a clear plastic bag for our car seats. I know it differs by airport....

  • We took our carseat on board with us and gate checked our baby jogger city elite in it's carry bag.

  • Don't you need to have his seat on the airplane so he can fly next to you?  I wouldn't personally check or gate check a car seat at all, if I was flying, I'd put my kid in a seat in his car seat and strap him in.

  • I'd definitely put anything you check in a bag - otherwise it's likely to get quite dirty

Carseat wise - if you think your LO will sleep, bring it on - otherwise I'd gate check it, they are bulky and actually make the flight more difficult IMO. A toddler is JUST the right distance to kick the seat in front of them when in a carseat - it's a nightmare! Plus without a carseat you have a lot more space to keep them entertained during the flight.

You don't have to have a carseat for a LO on a plane, but any child over 2 HAS to be buckled in for take off, landing and turbulance

My dd prefers to have her CARES harness, or just the normal plane seatbelt if it's a long flight, but for short hauls when I know she'll sleep, I bring the carseat on with me

I'd NEVER check a carseat at checkin though - it would get so beat up - and I've heard checking it there (and not at the gate) can be the equivalent to the carseat going through a car crash - NOT good for the seat safety wise!!
