Help Solve - prob. w/ gate at top of stairs

In both our homes, the gate at the top of the stairs, that we put into dry wall anchors has come out of the wall. 

We cannot do a pressure mounted gate bc of a weird stair situation that is difficult to explain, but basically if we did a pressure mounted gate the bottom bar would be floating, unable to lay on the stair.

Anyone have any advice? Or if you had a similar situation, how did you remedy it?

    You have to find a stud to anchor it into. All the gates I had like that stated that in the instructions (which is usually the difference between top of stair gates and pressure mounted, it has to be secured). If you don't have a stud in a good place used butterfly anchors (like you use to bolt high weight load shelves) or metal high weight anchors, not the plastic drywall anchors.

    my husband is an a$$hole and says butterfly anchors won't work even though all the other reviews i read of people with the same problem said the same thing...

    Lol, you'd have to get them rated to 100 lbs. we used them to secure floating shelves and they didn't come down. There's more than one style too, but other than that the only other thing would be to cut out some drywall, put in two by four bracing and redo the drywall again. Looks like your in for some fun, good luck.

    he put on 2X4 on each side and now the gate is securely into that. looks like crap but it is safe and will look better once sanded and painted to match rest of hallway.

    You definitely need to hit the studs for the top of stairs gate and no pressure mounting gates because they can dislodge with enough weight against them.  In our house the studs were offset from the logical place to put a stair gate, so we mounted a wide board to the wall via the studs and then were able to use that board to mount the hardware for the gate.  Not pretty, but it does the job.  I can post pics if you'd like.
