Question about fused placentas

So at our appointment the doctor mentioned it looks as though our placentas have fused into one.  He said he couldn't be 100% certain but that he would monitor us on each scan.

I was so happy with their weights and honestly over being there (after 4 hours) that I totally just said ok to the above.  Now that I am home, I am wondering will the fusion affect my chance for a vaginal delivery and if they truly are fused, don't they technically share a blood flow now?  My next appointment is with the MFM so I am hoping for a better look and more answers then but it is not for two weeks.

If anyone else had this happen and can shed any light I would greatly appreciate it!  I am staying away from dr. google and my office is open yet to call and ask.

Re: Question about fused placentas

  • My placentas are overlapping and have begun to fuse. My NT scan took forever because they spent so much time looking at the placentas. At my last visit my OB told me that it didn't necessarily count me out for a vaginal delivery. My understanding is that you can have microvessels that connect between the two, but that the larger blood vessels that carry the majority of blood don't necessarily cross borders, so the babies may not share the majority of the blood flow.

  • I was told my placentas were fused from one of he earliest scans/ultrasounds. No one has brought it up since and I see different OBs every other week as well as MFMs. Babies are growing amazingly so they don't seem to be lacking in any area and all docs seem to think I'm a prime candidate for vaginal delivery.

You're right not to Dr. Google it!

  • My placentas fused at some point but I don't know when; it was never mentioned to me at any appointment, but I had my placenta encapsulated and so I saw that they had fused when I looked at it later.  I had a vaginal delivery and while my twins were only 8 oz apart, my baby boy was a little scrawny looking despite weighing 8 lbs.  However, they were both healthy and fine.

  • Thank you all so much ladies!  I spoke with my OB and he said it happens a lot and is not a concern or a discount for vaginal deliver.  He said in rare (very rare) cases a fused placenta can lead to a type of TTTS but generally it occurs when they fuse much early not as late as ours seem to.

I feel much more relaxed about it now!..

  • I don't know much about them except that I know it's not very uncommon.  Like someone else said they will not have any major shared blood vessels like a monochorionic placenta.  TTTS in di/di is so rare that there are only a few proven cases  - as in they examined the placenta after birth and injected the vessels to test and see if they really were transferring to each other.  Mono/di moms can have vaginal deliveries so I don't see why you wouldn't be able as long as everything else is lined up right.  Hopefully it won't pose any issues for you!
  • My boys did have fused placentas and a growth discordance. I had to have them a little early (36w5d) but the one that was smaller and not growing as well packed on the weight after we was born.
