2nd Trimester

If you have or had pree...

I'm just now diagnosed at 25 weeks and the doctors are very worried it's so early. I'm getting good medical care, but I was wondering...

From when you were diagnosed with a mild case, how long were you able to last before you were induced?

Did bestrest seem to help you keep your bp down?

Did you make any other changes to help?  I know you can't really do anything, but maybe you thought calm thoughts or something?

What else should I know?

 Thanks!

Re: If you have or had pree...

  • I had Pre-e at 38 weeks and they put me on bedrest for one week. After that week i went to the dr. and my BP did go down but not enough for them so they induced me. I didnt have protein in my urine though so it was a very mild case

  • I had it starting at 35 weeks with DS. They took me out of work, bedrest for a week, BPs came down. I was really swollen and sometimes had vision changes, but never had protein in my urine. I made it to my due date.

Just educate yourself on the signs/symptoms you should be looking for, and see where things go. Try not to stress, follow the docs recommendations about retrictions, etc. I work mother-baby and have seen people make it to term when diagnosed early, it just depends on how severe it gets. GL momma, take care.

  • Thanks.  I am always normal at home, but about half the time in the doctor's office recently I am in the 140/80 zone.  I had a +1 protein on the kit and did a 24 hour which was 378, when the cut-off for mild is 300 (but for severe is 5000).  I was really dehydrated because of severe morning sickness that has lasted the whole pregnancy, so I am hoping that with a better effort at drinking water and being calm, maybe my case is really borderline and I can stave this off.  I've got a high risk OB, some extra baby monitoring, and steroids so I feel good about this today...but I read that once you are diagnosed the average time until baby is 2 weeks.  I'm not sure if that's for someone this early tho...
  • I was diagnosed at 34w, 4d and put on modified bedrest at home for a week.  At my follow up appointment, it was getting worse, so they sent me to the hospital to be induced at 35w, 4d.  Bedrest didn't seem to change anything for me, but my case ended up being pretty severe, not mild.

Like othesr have said, keep an eye out for warning signs -- extreme swelling, vision issues, headaches, etc.  This is definitely not something you want to keep to yourself.

How often will you be seeing your doctor now that you have been diagnosed?

Good luck!  I hope you can keep your LO baking for a good long time.

  • I think I get to see the high risk person once/week.  She's a little busier than the other doctors at my practice, so maybe not quite as often, but hopefully I'll have some baby well-checks in there and so I can average once/week with at least someone at my practice, all of whom seems pretty good at this.  I don't have any symptoms yet, but I do have a checklist from the doctor, so I'm on the look out.  I hope it stays this way and it's just a really boring 3 months in bed.  But every day I get to grow her feels different and lucky now.  And then I guess it's a salt free and extra healthy lifestyle for me once this is all over since although I am not someone who is predicted to have this and am not obese, once you get it this early, you are more likely to have obesity related health problems in your future...yikes.
  • I was diagnosed at 32 weeks and bedrest helped keep my blood pressure down until I was induced at 37 weeks.

Five weeks is promising.  Did you get worse at 37 weeks or was it policy to induce then if you were mild?  If I get really luck and don't get worse, I'd rather go without induction if I could, but I think that may not be a choice for people with pree in most practices, and probably mine...

No, I didn't get worse -- I plateaued at borderline high blood pressure while on bedrest. I basically camped on the sofa for all that time so that I could be sure to prop myself on my left side. I also had to test regularly for protein in my urine but that never got too out of control either. As I recall, I had been on bedrest so long and also had GD so I think they just wanted to put me out of my misery at that point. They gave me an amnio first to make sure my son's lungs were fully developed before they induced me. I think I could have made it possibly to my due date.

  • Started having problems with blood pressure around 31 weeks, swelling and weight gain ballooned by 35 and I was on solid bed rest, at week 37 they induced me for very high blood pressure but I at least lasted until week 37. The bed rest helped, also my current clinic is adamant about me taking Lutein this pregnancy as studies have found it to reduce the risk of preeclampsia. I did have a spike in my blood pressure, but since taking the lutein it seems to have stabilized and stayed in a decent level. Could be coincidence but I'm willing to try whatever to stay away from bed-rest this pregnancy.

  • Well, these stories are encouraging.  I have some leutin because my family has macular degeneration and it's supposed to help with that.  Hmm...wonder if pree and mg are related.  I'll look into taking it, although I think by about 20 weeks, it might be too late to really steer things too far away from where they're going...but reducing is good too.

I'll be sending positive vibes your way that you make it many, many more weeks!

  • I had mild pre-e with both of my previous pregnancies. Both times it started at 37+ weeks. The first time I was on bedrest for two weeks with every other day office visits then induced at 39w. The second time I was told to "take it easy" but that since I had a toddler at home and am a SAHM they felt ordering bedrest wasn't practical. I was induced at 39w 2d.

This time I've had high blood pressure pretty much since getting pregnant (when not pregnant I'm 110/70). At my 20w u/s I was at 158/100 (!!!!) but they are pretty sure that was anxiety and not indicative of where my BP normally is. The next week at my regular visit I was 142/93. So they did a 24 hour urine and put me on blood pressure meds. The urine came back within normal range (protein was 125, which is normal) so right now they're treating it as pregnancy induced hypertension knowing it likely will change given my history.  They have me monitoring my bp at home and logging it. If half or more of the readings are 140+ or 90+ then I need to call immediately, otherwise just keep going. They said to take it easy, but that with two kids at home they know bedrest for this long isn't possible. I already eat a fairly low sodium diet, so I'm being cautious about it but mostly sticking to what I normally do as some sodium is necessary.

Good luck and (((vibes))) that that baby stays put as long as possible!
