Pre-School and Daycare

My son barely eats.....

He only eats about 7-8 different things. I have tried everything. He doesn't eat ANY veggies and very little fruit. I have been consistant with offering new foods on a continual basis and he just doesn't eat them. He would rather starve than eat a veggie or anything of nutrition,  Any advice?

  • I've got nothing other than the more obvious things:

--cut them into super fun shapes/make them into things

--let him use dips, peanut butter, cheese spread, etc with them

--Have him help pick them out and prepare them

--Have a 'tasting party' and have him try like 3 things and then get some kind of reward

--try different formats. Those squeezy pureed fruit blends, maybe? My kids love those things.

    --canned fruits?

--try not to make it a huge deal so he doesn't stonewall it even more.

--try to tie to a character or TV show or whatever that he really likes and talk about how the character likes broccoli, or whatever!

I realize that he might just be SUPER picky. Good luck!

  • Try a reward system. If he loves chocolate milk, tell him once he tries his other food then get can have some. Start slowly. If he eats even a tiny nibble then reward him with a little milk.He will start to learn that if he eats the food you want him to eat, you will reward him with his choice.

Also, allow him to make choices. Ask him if he wants an apple or a banana. Do no give any other option. Kids love feeling like they are independently making their own decisions.

When it doubt, please remember: There are no cases where a child died of starvation when there was food sitting in front of them. If he is hungry, he will eat. Hold all unhealthy snacks and use as rewards only until you see improvement!

     Good luck!

  • With DD we started slow. Put it to her lips, taste it, take a small bite. The more she got used to the texture and taste the easier it got with that one item. I also made a HUGE deal (so excited) when she would try it but we had many resistant tantrums. We had to go to occupational therapy for her eating issues but now she eats almost everything.

Offer the veggie or fruit first and nothing else on the plate. After he puts it to his lips and/or takes a bite put the next thing on the plate. More willing to try new things and take a risk if they are hungry.

DS is also very very picky and I am just hoping he outgrows it but  I am starting to use some of these methods with him too.
