keeping a schedule with one good eater and one not so good eater

My 2 month old girls are about 1.5 lbs apart (Im not concerned about the weight difference) but they have very different appetites. E is only eating 2-3 oz per feeding, she had bad reflux and often throws up... S is eating 4.5 oz at every feeding and wants to eat more frequently than E.

How do you keep a schedule? I feel like Im always trying to hold S off and if she's hungry., i want to feed her but if I do, it's a struggle to feed E or the whole schedule gets thrown off.

  • I had a champ eater and a snacker. When I would nurse them I nursed the champ first and then let the snacker...snack :) If it was a bottle, the champ would eat an entire 4-6 oz (depending on the amt) and the snacker would eat 2-5 oz depending on how hungry he was. For the most part my champ eater would eat on a pretty good 2-2.5 hour window when they were younger, and his brother mr.snacker would eat when he was hungry. Sometimes it was every hour, sometimes it was every 3.  When they got older champ nursed/ate every 3 hours and snacker still snacked :) I tried as best I could to get the snackster on the champs schedule...but, alas twins really are two different people!:) And when I finally went with it..well, it was hard for a while, but it worked better than trying to fight it :)  I should note, that champ started STTN at 9 weeks while snacker took until 13 and then not consistantly until 6 months.  In that time champ would take a bottle and STTN, while snacker would also take abottle before bed, and then 2 hours later be awake still (he was also a catnapper and not a solid sleep napper) and nurse to sleep. then he would nurse once thruogh the night.

:) I don't have a solution, except maybe try to find a way to work with what both of their personalities need ;)

  • ps... my boys were born 6oz apart in weight and very quickly champ started putting a distance between their weights. Currently at 2 years old champ is 2 inches taller and weighs 7 lbs heavier!:) He still eats a solid meal, while his brother picks and snacks.

  • I used to get really frustrated when one ate better than the other. I hated throwing formula away, esp since I knew he COULD eat it. Once I got it through my head that they are individuals and may not eat the same amt per btl, and offered L less my life got easier and L finished btl again lol.

  • I have two very different eaters too and it was very frustrating. I think it's just a balancing act between holding one off and coaxing the other to eat earlier. I have always tried to stick to the EASY routine (where they eat when they first wake up), but when the eating difference got really wack-o I gave the snacker a little top-off before each nap, so she was eating less each time but more frequently. Then when things would settle down I would experiment with dropping the top-off to see if she could make it. GL! I know it's hard balancing the need for synchronization with meeting each of their needs.
