Cloth Diapers?

Do any of you ladies with children already use cloth diapers? I am thinking about it but before I go and buy things I want to know what works best, how much should I buy, and how much money can I really save. I won't be using a diaper service either and I don't know if that makes a difference. The last time I use a cloth diaper it was pins, plastic pants, and me getting pooped on... In public! If you can share any useful knowledge/experience I would appreciate it :)

Re: Cloth Diapers?

  • We use prefolds with a clip that looks like it comes from an ace bandage. It is excellent. I never tried out others as I knew these would be the least expensive way to do it. We had 3 dozen infant diapers and now maybe 2 dozen larger ones that DD has been in since maybe 6 months. She will be in these ones till potty trained. I also use cloth wipes and wash my own. I feel like we save a ton of money! I haven't really done the math lately, but I think each disposable diaper you use is about .25 cents give or take - then you can multiple that by how many in a life time.  Here is an interesting link on that - https://www.babblesoft.com/blog/diapers/how-many-diapers-by-age/

You could be saving a few thousand dollars depending on how many kids you have makes the investment even better!

  • We use cloth and love it.  We're planning to use cloth with this LO.  I've saved a considerable amount of money already.  We started saving the first year and we're still using the same diapers for #2, but there is a wide range of what you can spend on diapers.  We use bumgenius pockets and I was careful about how I built my stash so I got awesome deals.

  • I think the amount you save can vary considerably. You would have to research different types of diapers and think about your family dynamic. I think the cheapest option is probably using prefolds and covers, but it wasn't an option I liked. We use pocket diapers, but don't CD full time either. Just do your research. Also, a diaper trial might be a good try for you.

What didn't you like about that option?

  • Any good websites? The town I live in is in the middle of nowhere and there are SO many websites and since I don't know what I'm doing really, I don't know if I'd be getting ripped off...

  • The cloth diaper board is a really good resource. They usually PSA good deals form different sites.

My DH wouldn't use them at all, and I found I preferred the pockets or AIOs. It was nothing personal with the diapers.
  • I found the FAQ section in the CD board really helpful. There's a link there for "I want to CD where do I start?". Within that are several great websites. Hope that helps!

It's very overwhelming at first. I did a lot of research and also took an intro class at a local-ish store. I found the class to help me a lot. We switched when my daughter was 3 months old and pooping out of every disposable on the market.

  • I use prefolds/fitteds with a cover for the NB stage, and then move to pockets/AIOs for the more active baby stage (usually once solids are introduced).  I just went through and tried a whole bunch of different diapers to find what worked best for us.  It's also not the same for every baby.  A friend of mine ended up with almost a completely different system because her chunky guy needed a different fit than my skinny guy.

If you can find one, I'd suggest doing a diaper trial system.  Or if you are just going to buy a few different types, there are tons of websites to buy them through.  I've never seen cloth diapers in stores, just always bought them online or through Craigslist.

Websites to try:  Kelly's Closet, Cotton Babies, Green Mountain Diaper (mostly prefold/fitted),  Jillian's Drawers, or Punkernoodle Baby.  Sometimes EcoBabyBuys also has good deals.

  • We did CD's for my son and are planning to for this little one as well.  We did prefolds and Bummis covers as newborns and found they worked great at containing all that messy poop in the early days.  Super easy to wash and his clothes stayed cleaner than the few times we did disposables.

Longer term we used mostly BumGenius and Fuzzi Bunz pockets.  I love the one size BG's but my son was a skinny little thing and that tends to be a body shape that works better for that brand.
